A head-mounted display may include a display system and an optical system in a housing. The display system may have a pixel array that produces light associated with images. The display system may also have a linear polarizer through which light from the pixel array passes and a quarter wave plate through which the light passes after passing through the quarter wave plate. The optical system may be a catadioptric optical system having one or more lens elements. The lens elements may include a plano-convex lens and a plano-concave lens. A partially reflective mirror may be formed on a convex surface of the plano-convex lens. A reflective polarizer may be formed on the planar surface of the plano-convex lens or the concave surface of the plano-concave lens. An additional quarter wave plate may be located between the reflective polarizer and the partially reflective mirror.

Optical system for head-mounted display

A head mounted display with wide field of view (WFOV) is disclosed. A conventional small display is used in conjunction with a Beam Steering Mechanism (BSM) to dynamically steer the FOV of the displayed image at a very fast rate to provide an effectively WFOV for immersive visual experience. An electrically actuated switchable Steering Mechanism (SM) is provided within the display projection module that steers the projected image towards different portions of the lens at a fast rate. The steering can be either in one, two or three dimensions. The steering allows for the displayed image to be wider field of view (FOV) to the observer than conventionally projected images that are small fixed FOV. The SM is steered at a high rate so as to be indistinguishable to the human observer. The steering can be controlled in a gaze tracked dynamic, on-demand fashion so as to save power consumed by the display system.

Method and system for displaying images

A display method and system includes a module that intercepts the lightfield from an ambient Real World Scene in an observer's direct line-of-sight,, and then routes it through a spatial light modulator where the Scene forms an image. During a first portion of the frame time, selective pixels corresponding to the real world scene image on the SLM are modulated for their transparency or opacity and routed to the observer's eye. In a second portion of the frame time, a Digital computer generated Virtual image is created by spatially multiplexing a second illuminant on the same SLM and then routing it to the observer's eye. The resultant time-averaged image, as perceived by the observer, has the Real World Scene modulated for both its Transparency/opacity and also blended with computer generated Digital Virtual image. The present invention enables the ability to per-pixel hide or occlude physical objects in the Real World scene in the observer's direct line-of-sight,, and allows those to be replaced with computer generated Digital content in a pixel wise manner. Physical objects can be camouflaged and completely artificial objects, or remote people can be Digitally introduced into the observer's Physical environment where virtual shadows and virtual lighting can be generated on-demand. Therefore our invention allows blending of the Physical and Digital realms for a truly magical visual experience.

Spatio-temporal multiplexed single panel based mutual occlusion capable head mounted display system and method

In described examples, a first TIR or RTIR element is arranged to introduce at least red light to a first spatial light modulator for modulation thereof, and a second TIR or RTIR element is arranged to introduce at least green light to a second spatial light modulator for modulation thereof. At least one of the first and second TIR or RTIR elements is arranged to introduce blue light to at least one of the first and second spatial light modulators, respectively, for modulation thereof: time-sequentially apart from the first spatial light modulator's modulation of the introduced red light, to an extent the blue light is so introduced to the first spatial light modulator; and time-sequentially apart from the second spatial light modulator's modulation of the introduced green light, to an extent the blue light is so introduced to the second spatial light modulator.

Light modulator image display projector architectures

Display panels and methods of manufacture are described for down converting a peak emission wavelength of a pump LED within a subpixel with a quantum dot layer. In some embodiments, pump LEDs with a peak emission wavelength below 500 nm, such as between 340 nm and 420 nm are used. QD layers in accordance with embodiments can be integrated into a variety of display panel structures including a wavelength conversion cover arrangement, QD patch arrangement, or QD layers patterned on the display substrate.

Light emitting structure to aid LED light extraction

A method for directing light beams includes generating a light beam along a light path. A voltage differential is created by generating a voltage in a first and second linear electrode contacts arranged such that the first and second linear electrical contacts alternate with each other. The light path is altered by passing the light beam through a liquid crystal device coupled to the first and second linear electrical contacts.

Non-moving optical beam steering using non-pixelated liquid crystal optical phased arrays

In one embodiment, a method of rendering images includes providing eyewear having at least one lens capable of mutual occlusion for optical see-through HMD applications. A display module routes image from an ambient real world environment first through a spatial light modulator so that selective portions of the real world scene can be pixel-wise occluded. The resultant modulated image is then combined with another computer generated virtual image and then routed to the viewer. In another embodiment an electrically actuated switchable occlusion mechanism is provided within the display module that allows the ability to provide the occlusion capability only when needed.
