Systems and methods for bond quality assessment are provided. In one example, operations include receiving an input image of a vehicle component have adhesive bonding at a surface of the vehicle component. The operations cause a neural network to generate a set surface of features based on a set of training images. The operations also cause a neural network to classify one or more of the surface features as one or more inadequate coverage regions of the adhesive bonding. The operations further cause the neural network to generate a mapping. The operations cause the neural network to predict a coverage score for the vehicle component based on the one or more inadequate coverage regions. The operations include applying a set of rules to the mapping and the coverage score to generate a bond quality assessment of the vehicle component. The operations include executing a vehicle component fabrication plan.

Bond quality assessment system

A brake pad for a vehicle disk brake assembly includes a backing plate configured to support a brake lining. A plurality of openings extend through the backing plate to define retaining members. A shim includes a base and tabs extending into the openings to secure the shim to the backing plate. Each tab includes a first portion extending away from the base and a curved second portion extending from the first portion back towards the base.

A brake pad for a vehicle disc brake assembly has a backing plate, a shim, and an adhesive bond between the backing plate and the shim that retains the shim on the backing plate. The backing plate is configured to support a brake lining and has a recessed portion with transverse first and second surfaces. The first surface is a bottom surface of the recessed portion and the second surface is a perimeter surface that defines a perimeter of the bottom surface. The shim has a face surface that is also transverse to the bottom surface. The face surface is configured to engage with the perimeter surface to mechanically restrain the shim in the recessed portion from lateral displacement.
