A production line a first conveyor for advancing assembled vehicle seats to a checking station and a second conveyor for advancing each of the checked seats to a subsequent station, the nature of the subsequent station depending on as-built coordinates relating to each of the vehicle seats and determined by the checking station. The checking station includes a displacement mechanism and a detector. The displacement mechanism displaces a hip point fixture between a first standby position and a second test position in which the hip point fixture is depressed into each of the vehicle seats to simulate a load. The detector determines the as-built coordinates, at least one such as-built coordinate being determined from a location on the hip point fixture.

A seat assembly having an automatically adjustable head restraint is provided. A seat back is mounted within a vehicle and a head restraint assembly is adjustably mounted to the vehicle and disposed adjacent the seat back. The seat back includes a sensor mounted adjacent an upper portion of the seat back for detecting the presence and position of a passenger relative to the head restraint. A controller is in communication with the sensor and receives the output signal of the sensor. The controller then generates a control signal in order to position the head restraint based on the output signals of the sensor. An actuator is connected to the head restraint for positioning the head restraint based on a control signal received from the control module.

A foldable head restraint assembly includes a mounting subassembly, a structural shell, and a locking plate. The mounting subassembly supports the structural shell and includes a first support post, a second support post, a cross member, and a latch rigidly. The cross member is attached to the first and second support posts and to the latch. The folding motion of the head restraint is initiated by movement of the locking plate which is positionable at a first plate position for engaging the latch and at a second plate position for releasing the latch. The structural shell is pivotable about the mounting subassembly when the latch plate is in the second plate position.

A sensor defines a first area, and is configured to output signals to the actuator arrangement to facilitate movement of the head restraint from its raised position to its lowered position when an object comes within a predetermined distance of the first area. The sensor is disposed proximate a rearview mirror in the vehicle such that a user can simultaneously view the head restraint in the mirror and the first area. Remote actuation systems using infrared sensor assemblies such infrared proximity sensors are disclosed.

A vehicle seat assembly includes a seat bottom attached to a seat back with a moveable head restraint attached to the seat back. Characteristically, the head restraint is movable from a raised to a lowered position and vice versa. The head restraint of this embodiment when in the raised position is able to withstand impacts that meet or exceed the specifications of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard ('FMVSS') 201.
