The disclosure relates to systems and methods for the production of hydrogen (H) from ammonia (NH) in a membrane reactor that include using ammonia as a sweep gas. Ammonia is converted to hydrogen and nitrogen (N), and the hydrogen is separated from the nitrogen and unreacted ammonia by passing the hydrogen through a hydrogen-permeable membrane while using ammonia as a sweep gas. The ammonia sweep gas can be separated from the permeated hydrogen and continuously recycled.

A crude oil is processed to form a hydrocarbon feed stream. The hydrocarbon feed stream is exposed to heat in an absence of oxygen to the convert the hydrocarbon feed stream into a solids stream and a gas stream. The gas stream is separated into an exhaust gas stream and a first hydrogen stream. The carbon is separated from the solids stream to produce a carbon stream. Electrolysis is performed on a water stream to produce an oxygen stream and a second hydrogen stream. At least a portion of the oxygen of the oxygen stream and a second portion of the carbon of the carbon stream are combined to generate power and a carbon dioxide stream. The carbon dioxide is used in dry reforming to produce syngas.

According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a solid oxide fuel cell includes a cathode, an anode, and a solid oxide electrolyte between the anode and the cathode. The solid oxide electrolyte includes a solid oxide, and the anode includes a porous scaffold. The porous scaffold includes a solid oxide having metal-based catalysts disposed on one or more surfaces of the porous scaffold. In embodiments, at least one ammonia decomposition layer is disposed proximate the surface of the porous scaffold and is configured to convert ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen for subsequent feed of hydrogen to the anode. The ammonia decomposition layer also includes a metal decomposition catalyst.

Direct ammonia-fed solid oxide fuel cell and methods for making the same

According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a method of producing hydrogen in a fuel cell includes passing ammonia under pressure to an anode of the fuel cell, where the ammonia is decomposed into nitrogen gas and protons. The fuel cell comprises a cathode, the anode, and a proton-conducting electrolyte between the anode and the cathode. The anode includes an ammonia decomposition catalyst. The method further includes passing the purging the nitrogen from the anode, passing the protons through the proton-conducting electrolyte to the cathode, and passing the electrons from the anode to the cathode, wherein the protons and the electrons react to produce substantially pure hydrogen gas under pressure.

Method for producing compressed hydrogen using electrochemical systems

A method of operating a solid oxide fuel cell system may comprise contacting a cathode gas comprising oxygen with a heating element to produce a heated cathode gas, passing the heated cathode gas through a cathode of a solid oxide fuel cell stack to increase the temperature of the solid oxide fuel cell stack to an operation temperature and reduce the oxygen to oxygen anions, and passing an anode gas through an anode of the solid oxide fuel cell stack to initiate the electrochemical oxidation of the oxygen anions within the anode. The passing of the anode gas through the anode of the solid oxide fuel cell stack may be initiated when the solid oxide fuel cell stack is heated to an operational temperature.

Solid oxide fuel cell systems and methods of operating solid oxide fuel cell systems

A hydrocarbon feed stream is exposed to heat in an absence of oxygen (pyrolysis) to convert the hydrocarbon feed stream into a solids stream and a gas stream. The solids stream includes carbon. The gas stream includes hydrogen. The gas stream is separated into an exhaust gas stream and a first hydrogen stream. The first hydrogen stream includes at least a portion of the hydrogen from the gas stream. The carbon is separated from the solids stream to produce a carbon stream. At least a portion of the oxygen of the oxygen stream and at least a portion of the carbon of the carbon stream are combined to generate power and a carbon dioxide stream. A method for ammonia decomposition to produce hydrogen, the method comprising the steps of introducing an ammonia stream to a reactor, wherein the ammonia stream comprises ammonia, wherein the reactor comprises a cobalt-based catalyst, the cobalt-based catalyst comprising 15 wt % and 70 wt % of cobalt, 5 wt % and 45 wt % of cerium, and 0.4 wt % and 0.5 wt % barium, wherein a remainder of weight of the cobalt-based catalyst is oxygen; contacting the ammonia in the ammonia stream with the cobalt-based catalyst, wherein the cobalt-based catalyst is operable to catalyze an ammonia decomposition reaction; catalyzing the ammonia decomposition reaction to cause the ammonia decomposition in the presence of the cobalt-based catalyst to produce hydrogen; and withdrawing a product stream from the reactor, the product stream comprising hydrogen.

A solid oxide fuel cell including a hydrocarbon reforming catalyst and a method for forming the solid oxide fuel cell are provided. An exemplary solid oxide fuel cell includes a cell. The cell includes a filled metal substrate including holes substantially filled with a permeable material that includes a hydrocarbon reforming catalyst, wherein the filled metal substrate has a front facing a fuel flow and a back facing an electrochemical stack. A permeable layer is formed on the back of the filled metal substrate that is in contact with the permeable material of the filled holes. The cell includes an anode layer proximate to the permeable layer, an electrolyte layer proximate to the anode layer, a diffusion barrier proximate to the anode layer, and a cathode proximate to the diffusion barrier.
