Methods and apparatus for guiding medical care based on sensor data from the gastrointestinal tract are described utilizing an apparatus which can be used with enteral feeding. Generally, the apparatus includes an elongated body having a length configured for insertion into a stomach and at least one pair of electrodes located along the length of the elongated body and positionable for placement within the stomach. A controller in electrical communication with the at least one pair of electrodes is included and the control may also be configured to measure a conductivity or impedance between the pair of electrodes and to determine a gastric residual volume of the stomach based on the measured conductivity or impedance.

Methods and apparatus for guiding medical care based on sensor data from the gastrointestinal tract

Systems, devices and methods for draining and analyzing bodily fluids and assessing health are described and generally comprise a drainage tube in fluid communication with at least one opening near or at a distal end of a catheter, a pump in fluid communication with the drainage tube and configured to apply a negative pressure to the drainage tube, and a valve configured for unidirectional flow and in fluid communication with the drainage tube. A controller is configured to actuate the pump to apply the negative pressure for clearing an airlock and to monitor a urine output from the patient over a first predetermined period of time above a urine output threshold and over a second predetermined period of time below the urine output threshold. The controller may determine a risk of acute kidney injury if the urine output below the urine output threshold exceeds the second predetermined period of time.

Devices and methods to measure gastric residual volume (GRV) are described where at least one additive component (a GRV indicator) may be dispersed in a body lumen such as a stomach. The GRV indicator may changes a physical (chemical, electrical, thermal, mechanical, optical, etc.) characteristic within the stomach by a measureable degree. This degree of change and/or the rate of return to the previous state, may be used to determine the GRV of a patient. The determined GRV can also be used to automatically or semi-automatically control the patient's feeding rate and/or volume and/or frequency to adequately nourish the patient but avoid complications. The physical characteristic(s) may also be used to detect that the feeding catheter or tube is in the correct location (ie stomach vs lung or esophagus.

Devices and methods to measure gastric residual volume

Systems, devices and methods for sensing physiologic data and draining and analyzing bodily fluids are described which are capable of sensing physiologic data based on sensors incorporated into a catheter adapted to reside in any of a urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, rectal location, pre-peritoneal, pleural space or other body cavity. The devices aid emptying of the bladder, measure urine output and various urine parameters such as oxygen tension, urine conductance and urine specific gravity, monitor renal function, analyze urine parameters, including urine content, including the presence of infection, and track and/or control fluid administration.
