Various embodiments disclosed herein provide for switching between non-orthogonal and orthogonal multiple access protocols dynamically. A base station device can determine whether a user equipment device on a communication link should use a non-orthogonal multiple access system or an orthogonal multiple access system based on one or more attributes of the communication link, and send an indication of the selection to the user equipment device. The base station device can indicate the selection using a spreading factor parameter that is either equal to one or greater than one. If the spreading factor parameter is equal to one, that can indicate to the user equipment device to use an orthogonal multiple access system, whereas if the spreading factor parameter is greater than one, that can indicate to the user equipment device to use a non-orthogonal multiple access system.

Switching between non-orthogonal multiple access and orthogonal multiple access systems for uplink data transmission

The gains with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for uplink data transmissions can be high when chosen codes are orthogonal. However, when codes are non-orthogonal, the gains can be low. NOMA can be used when there is more than one mobile device using the same resources. Since orthogonal codes cannot be possible for every length, codes which have low cross-correlation properties can be used. However, when there are a large number of mobile devices using the same resources, the cross-correlation between the codes can cause interference to the mobile devices. Reducing the gains of a NOMA system can reduce the overall throughput. Thus, transmitting data on the same resources in a NOMA can occur in spite of the interference to the UEs transmitting data on the same resources. Therefore, a non-orthogonal multiple access design for a 5G network can mitigate interference.

Non-orthogonal multiple access for uplink data transmission for 5G or other next generation network

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a base station that includes a phased array antenna system and a MIMO antenna system. The MIMO antenna system may receive sounding signals sent by user equipment (UE) and determine angular location information for each UE. The angular location information may be used by the phased array antenna system to create antenna beams. The angular location information may also be used to schedule communications with multiple UEs in common beams. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, obtaining a received channel-encoded data block having information bits, a transmitted error-check value, and redundant code bits. The redundant code bits correspond to a channel code applied to the received channel-encoded data block prior to transmission via a communication channel. A channel code type is identified and responsive to it being systematic, the information bits and the transmitted error-check value are obtained without decoding according to the channel code. The received channel-encoded data block is checked according to the transmitted error-check value to obtain a result. Responsive to the result not indicating an error, extracting the information bits without decoding the received channel-encoded data block according to the channel code. Responsive to the result indicating an error, decoding the received channel-encoded data block according to the channel code to obtain decoded information bits. Other embodiments are disclosed.

System and method for decoding encoded messages in a wireless communication system

An example method may include a processing system of a base station having a processor selecting a blank resource of a time and frequency resource grid of the base station for a transmission of a channel sounding waveform and transmitting the channel sounding waveform via the blank resource. Another example method may include a processing system of a channel sounding receiver receiving at a location, from a base station, a channel sounding waveform via a blank resource of a time and frequency resource grid of the base station, and measuring a channel property at the location based upon the channel sounding waveform.

Base station wireless channel sounding

Methods, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for presenting a visualization of at least one wireless channel parameter as an overlay on top of an image of an environment are described. For example, a processing system including at least one processor may obtain at least a first wireless channel parameter of at least a first location, generate a first visualization of the at least the first wireless channel parameter, where the first visualization indicates at least one of: a magnitude of the at least the first wireless channel parameter or a direction of the at least the first wireless channel parameter, and present the first visualization of the at least the first wireless channel parameter as an overlay on top of a first image of an environment associated with the first location via a display device.

Augmented reality channel sounding system

An example device may include at least three phased array antennas controllable to provide respective receive beams steerable in azimuth and elevation, where faces of the phased array antennas are arranged to provide a receive beam coverage 360 degrees in azimuth, and at least three radio frequency front ends to receive channel sounding waveforms from a fifth generation base station of a cellular network via the respective receive beams and to generate baseband signals from the channel sounding waveforms. The device may include a processing system including at least one processor in communication with the radio frequency front ends to steer the respective receive beams via instructions to the radio frequency front ends, receive the baseband signals from the radio frequency front ends, determine a plurality of measurements of at least one wireless channel parameter based upon the baseband signals, and record locations and spatial orientation information for the measurements.

Radio-based channel sounding using phased array antennas

An example method may include a processing system of a channel sounding receiver having a processor receiving from a base station, at a location, a channel sounding waveform via a plurality of carriers, sampling the channel sounding waveform via the plurality of carriers to generate a plurality of per-carrier time domain sample sets, and processing the plurality of per-carrier time domain sample sets via a plurality of discrete Fourier transform modules to provide a plurality of per-carrier frequency domain sample sets. The method may further include the processing system aligning the plurality of per-carrier frequency domain sample sets in gain and phase to provide a combined frequency domain sample set and measuring a channel property at the location based upon the combined frequency domain sample set.

Channel sounding using carrier aggregation

In one example, a processing system of a mobile channel sounding transmitter including at least one processor may establish a wireless side link between the mobile channel sounding transmitter and a channel sounding receiver, transmit, to the channel sounding receiver, a wireless synchronization signal via the wireless side link, and transmit at least one channel sounding waveform in accordance with the wireless synchronization signal. In another example, a processing system of a channel sounding receiver including at least one processor may establish a wireless side link between a mobile channel sounding transmitter and the channel sounding receiver, obtain, from the mobile channel sounding transmitter, a wireless synchronization signal via the wireless side link, and obtain, from the mobile channel sounding transmitter, at least one channel sounding waveform in accordance with the wireless synchronization signal.

A wireless channel sounding system may include a wireless channel sounding transmitter having at least two radio frequency front ends coupled to at least two phased array antennas to generate at least two radio frequency channel sounding waveforms from at least two baseband signals, the at least two phased array antennas each controllable to provide a respective transmit beam that is steerable in azimuth and elevation, and that comprises one of the at least two radio frequency channel sounding waveforms, where faces of the at least two phased array antennas are arranged to provide a transmit beam coverage over 360 degrees in azimuth, and a first processing system including at least one processor, in communication with the at least two radio frequency front ends, to provide the at least two baseband signals and steer the respective transmit beams via instructions to the at least two radio frequency front ends.

Phased array mobile channel sounding system

An example method may include a processing system of a cellular network having a processor receiving, from a mobile endpoint device, a measurement of a performance indicator, a location, and spatial orientation information, the measurement of the performance indicator based upon at least one wireless signal from a base station of the cellular network, and adjusting at least one aspect of the cellular network in response to the measurement of the performance indicator, the location, and the spatial orientation information. Another example method may include a processing system of a mobile endpoint device having a processor receiving a wireless signal from a base station of a cellular network, capturing a measurement of a performance indicator based upon the wireless signal, recording a location and spatial orientation information, and transmitting to the cellular network the measurement of the performance indicator, the location, and the spatial orientation information.
