An electronically controlled engine management system for an outboard motor, which determines the temperature of the engine and manipulates the engine management parameters to allow the engine to operate smoothly and efficiently. The engine temperature detection permits an efficient starting environment as well as an smooth starting to normal running transition period.

A cowling assembly for an outboard motor includes an improved construction that can supply relatively cool air containing little water to the induction device and can also supply air to cool engine components without reducing the charging efficiency. The outboard motor has an engine that includes an air induction device and is enclosed within the cowling. The cowling assembly defines a closed cavity in which the engine is contained and has an air intake system. An air intake duct structure introduces air into the cavity. The intake duct structure includes a plurality of relatively narrow connection passages and has an expansion chamber portion disposed on the downstream side of the passages. Intake noise is reduced by this construction. In one preferred form, the cowling assembly additionally has a second intake system. One or more connection passages communicate with the first air intake system and the second air intake system.

A fuel supply for an internal combustion engine includes an improved construction for inhibiting vapor from appearing in the fuel supplied to the engine's combustion chamber(s). A fuel injector, as one of fuel supply devices, is provided for supplying fuel to the combustion chamber of the engine. There are a first and second fuel reservoirs. The first fuel reservoir stores fuel and delivers it to the second fuel reservoir through a first fuel supply conduit, while the second fuel reservoir temporarily store the fuel and delivers it to the fuel injector through a second fuel supply conduit. The excess fuel is returned to the second fuel reservoir from the fuel injector through a fuel return conduit. The fuel supply includes a fuel cooling device for cooling the fuel passing through at least one of the conduits. The construction of the fuel supply and the fuel cooling device permits them to be located with the tight confines between the engine and a protective enclosure (e.g., a cowling of an outboard motor).

A four cycle outboard motor that have water cooled engines and an oil pan that is formed in the upper portion of the drive shaft housing. An exhaust pipe collects exhaust gases from an exhaust guide and delivers to a cavity that is formed in the oil pan by an interior wall thereof. The exhaust pipe does not terminate below the lower surface of the oil pan and idle exhaust gases are delivered to the area between the exterior of the exhaust pipe and the interior surface of the oil pan that defines the cavity. These idle exhaust gases are discharged to the atmosphere through and above the water exhaust gas discharge. The oil pan lower surface has a drain opening that is aligned with a vertical drain opening in the drive shaft housing.

A marine propulsion system and particularly an outboard motor wherein the outboard motor is provided with a control for preventing engine damage in response to an abnormal condition by reducing the speed of the engine through disabling certain cylinders. The cylinders disabled are chosen on the vertical position of the cylinder in the engine so as to provide improved running and avoid undesirable results. In addition, the disabling of the cylinders is precluded until the abnormal condition has existed more than a predetermined time period upon initial start-up so as to permit unencumbered normal warm up of the engine.

An insulator supports a plurality of charge formers on the end of an intake manifold. The insulator, made in part of elastic material, thermally decouples the charge formers from the engine to reduce conduction of engine heat to the charge formers. Expansion of the intake manifold due to heat deforms the insulator, without substantially moving the charge formers so as not to deform a linkage which interconnects the charge formers.

A throttle linkage system for synchronizing the movement between a plurality of throttle valves journaled in throttle bodies affixed to a common member that includes a link that has the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the member to which the throttle bodies are connected so as to avoid synchronization problems due to different thermal expansions. In addition, the linkage system is such that it accommodates manufacturing variations from the more remotely positioned throttle valves by providing a structure for permitting relative movement.

A linkage system interconnects a plurality of throttle shafts, while minimizing the effects of thermal expansion in the linkage on the throttle shafts. The linkage includes a plurality of linkage rods which interconnect a plurality of throttle levers attached to the throttle shafts. At least a first and a second linkage rod are connected to a first lever in a manner in which thermal expansion of the first linkage rod applies a force to the first lever which is equal but opposite to a force applied to the first lever due to thermal expansion of the second linkage rod.
