A polyoxymethylene resin composition which comprises (A) 70-99.89% by weight of a polyoxymethylene resin, (B) 0.1-20% by weight of at least one ethylene-substituted vinyl copolymer having a melting point of 40-80&deg; C. and prepared by polymerization using a radical polymerization catalyst, a chromium-containing catalyst or a Ziegler catalyst, and (C) 0.01-10% by weight of at least one liquid ethylene-&agr;-olefin random copolymer. The resin composition of the present invention is small in friction coefficient and excellent in abrasion resistance under high load and high temperature against noncrystalline resins.

A novel method for purifying a polyphenylene ether is disclosed. The method is characterized in that in separating a polyphenylene ether from a reaction product obtained by oxidative polymerization of a 2,6-di-substituted-phenol by means of a precipitation polymerization method in which a polymer is precipitated in the presence of a catalyst comprising a combination of a copper ion, a halide ion and not less than one type of amines and purifying a polyphenylene ether, wherein an amino carboxylic acid derivative is added to the reaction product and then a polymer is washed with a poor solvent for the polyphenylene ether.

A novel thermoplastic resin polymer comprising a polyphenylene ether (POE) and a low molecular weight styrene polymer bonded to the PPE in an amount of from 0.1 to 5.0% by weight based on the PPE has been found to have excellent moldability and thermal stability properties, while maintaining the excellent properties inherent in PPE, such as transparency and heat resistance. The resin polymer can be prepared from a polyphenylene ether and a styrene monomer by polymerization in the absence of a radical polymerization initiator. There is disclosed a novel method for producing a polyphenylene ether, in which a phenol compound is reacted with an oxidizing agent in a reaction medium in the presence of a highly active catalyst comprising at least one copper compound, at least one 1,3-diamine compound selected from N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,3-diaminopropanes and at least one halogen compound selected from a bromine compound and a chlorine compound, wherein the reaction medium contains at least one alcohol selected from the group consisting of methanol and ethanol. The novel method can be advantageously employed for efficiently producing a polyphenylene ether which has a desirable color and gives a composition improved with respect to Izod impact strength in combination with a rubber-reinforced polystyrene and the like. Major application of such a composition is found in the field of generally known engineering plastics.
