An inversion period parameter representative of a repetition period of change in the output from the oxygen concentration sensor over a predetermined diagnosis period is measured, and a determination parameter is calculated by averaging values of the inversion period parameter measured over different diagnosis periods as the predetermined diagnosis period. The determination of deterioration of the catalyst is carried out based on the determination parameter.

Catalyst deterioration-determining system for internal combustion engines

An evaporative fuel control system for an internal combustion engine having a throttle valve arranged in the intake system. A canister adsorbs evaporative fuel generated in the fuel tank. A purging passage extends between the canister and the intake system, for purging evaporative fuel into the intake system at a location downstream of the throttle valve, and a purge control valve is arranged across the purging passage, for controlling the flow rate of evaporative fuel supplied to the intake system through the purging passage. When the engine is in a predetermined operating condition, the flow rate of evaporative fuel supplied to the engine is changed by controlling the purge control valve, then the degree of influence of the evaporative fuel on an air-fuel ratio of a mixture supplied to the engine is detected before and after the changing of the flow rate of the evaporative fuel, and an operating error of the purge control valve is determined based on the detected degree of influence.

An air-fuel ratio sensor deterioration-detecting system is provided for an internal combustion engine having first and second air-fuel ratio sensors arranged in the exhaust system upstream and downstream of a catalytic converter therein. An ECU calculates a control parameter, based on an output from the second air-fuel ratio sensor, calculates an air-fuel ratio correction amount, based on an output from the first air-fuel ratio sensor and the calculated control parameter, and executes air-fuel ratio feedback control, based on the calculated air-fuel ratio correction amount. An evaporative fuel-processing system for an internal combustion engine has an evaporative emission control system. An ECU carries out negative pressurization of the interior of the evaporative emission control system, by opening a purge control valve and closing a vent shut valve, and determines presence/absence of leakage from the evaporative emission control system, based on a rate of decrease in negative pressure within the system, by closing a purge control valve. Before the negative pressurization, the interior of the evaporative emission control system is opened to the atmosphere, and during the open-to-atmosphere, a pressure state within the fuel tank is estimated based on a rate of change in an output from a pressure sensor which senses pressure within the evaporative emission control system. The ECU determines whether the evaporative emission control system is normal, based on the estimated pressure state.

An evaporative fuel-processing system for an internal combustion engine has an evaporative emission control system and a pressure sensor. An ECU carries out negative pressurization of the interior of the evaporative emission control system, by opening a purge control valve and closing a vent shut valve. The purge control valve is closed over a predetermined time period after the interior of the evaporative emission control system is brought into the predetermined negatively pressurized state, and a rate of decrease in negative pressure within the evaporative emission control system is detected. Then, it is determined whether or not there is leakage from the evaporative emission control system, based on the detected rate of decrease in the negative pressure, and at least one detected pressure value at at least one predetermined time point within the predetermined time period over which the purge control valve is closed.

An air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine has an exhaust gas component concentration sensor having a sensor element and arranged in the exhaust system of the engine, for detecting concentration of a predetermined component present in exhaust gases emitted from the engine. An ECU controls the air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture supplied to the engine, based on results of comparison between an output value from the sensor and a predetermined reference value, and detects deterioration of the exhaust gas component concentration sensor, based on the output value from the sensor. Engine operating condition sensors detect operating conditions of the engine. It is determined whether or not the engine is in a predetermined engine operating condition in which the sensor element temperature of the exhaust gas component concentration sensor lowers, based on outputs from the engine operating condition sensors. Detection of deterioration of the sensor is inhibited over a predetermined time period after the engine leaves the predetermined operating condition.

An air-fuel ratio sensor deterioration-detecting system for an internal combustion engine includes a catalytic converter arranged in the exhaust system, first and second air-fuel ratio sensors arranged in the exhaust system at respective locations upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter, and an ECU which calculates a value of a first control parameter, based on an output from the second air-fuel ratio sensor, and executes air-fuel ratio feedback control, based on the calculated value of the first control parameter. A value of at least one of the first and second control parameters is increased when a variation in the output from the second air-fuel ratio sensor is small during execution of the air-fuel ratio feedback control, and it is determined that the second air-fuel ratio sensor is deteriorated when the variation in the output from the second air-fuel ratio sensor is continuously small over a predetermined time period after the value of the at least one of the first and second control parameters has been increased.

A fuel injection amount control system for an internal combustion engine includes an ECU which calculates a desired amount of fuel to be supplied to each combustion chamber in response to operating conditions of the engine, and calculates values of parameters indicative of fuel adherence characteristics of the interior of the intake passage in response to operating conditions of the engine. The ECU further calculates a first fuel amount which is directly drawn into the combustion chamber from a fuel amount injected by the fuel injection valve, and a second amount of fuel which is carried off the wall surface of the intake passage due to evaporation and drawn into the combustion chamber, based upon the values of the parameters. The ECU calculates an injection amount of fuel to be injected, by correcting the desired fuel amount, based upon the first and second fuel amounts. When the engine is in a predetermined operating condition in which convergence of the fuel injection amount calculated by the ECU to the desired fuel amount can be unstable, the value of at least one of the parameters such that the fuel injection amount stably converges to the desired fuel amount.
