A first device may receive information that assigns a function related to network traffic associated with a content delivery network. The first device may implement the function based on the information that assigns the function. The first device may receive the network traffic from the content delivery network and may provide the network traffic to a subscriber device. The first device may provide, to a second device, information associated with the network traffic based on implementing the function. The second device may manage a subscriber session associated with the subscriber device based on the information associated with the network traffic.

Techniques are described that enable MAC (L2) address authentication within an L2 switching network, such as a metro transport network. Moreover, when used in an EVPN, the techniques provide fine grain policy control over the L2 switching network so as to enable carrier networks to specify and control topologies for transporting packet-based communications. Access routers of the EVPN communicate utilizes enhanced EVPN MAC route advertisements that include an additional attribute indicating a request that L2 network address(es) being advertised be validated by a network address authentication device. A route controller relays the EVPN MAC advertisement upon validation of the L2 networks address. Moreover, the route controller may utilize the EVPN MAC route advertisements to distribute MAC-level policies to control topologies and MAC learning within the EVPN and provide services such as per-MAC traffic quota limits.

In one example, a first routing device of an Ethernet virtual private network (EVPN) is multihomed to a customer edge (CE) routing device with a second routing device. The first routing device includes one or more network interfaces configured to send and receive packets. The first routing device also includes one or more processors configured to receive, via the one or more network interfaces, a first packet from the CE routing device including multicast join information, update multicast state information of the first routing device using the multicast join information from the first packet, and send, via the one or more network interfaces, a second packet including data representative of the multicast join information to the second routing device to synchronize multicast state information of the second routing device with the multicast state information of the first routing device.

Techniques are described that enable MAC (L2) address authentication within an L2 switching network, such as a metro transport network. Moreover, when used in an EVPN, the techniques provide fine grain policy control over the L2 switching network so as to enable carrier networks to specify and control topologies for transporting packet-based communications. Access routers of the EVPN communicate with a L2 network address authentication device of the metro transport network and only advertise MAC addresses into the EVPN that have been validated. Moreover, the L2 network address authentication device may distribute MAC-level policies to control topologies and MAC learning within the EVPN and provide services such as per-MAC traffic quota limits.

Techniques are described that enable local caching of content data within metro transport networks for delivery to subscribers of ISPs that are connected to metro transport networks. Routers within the metro transport network, including an access router, ISP-facing provider edge routers and one or more caching routers, establish an EVPN within the metro transport network. The access router outputs, within the EVPN and to the caching routers, EVPN route advertisements that advertise network address reachability information of the subscriber devices on behalf of the ISPs. Responsive to subscriber content requests that have been redirected from the ISPs and based on the EVPN route advertisements from the access routers, the caching routers of the metro transport network forward, by the EVPN, content from the local content cache to the access routers for efficient delivery to the one or more of the subscribers.

Content caching in metro access networks

Techniques are described that allow fast path delivery of content from content data networks directly to metro transport networks so as to bypass Internet service provider (ISP) networks. The metro transport network is positioned between subscriber devices and an Internet service provider network that authenticates the subscriber devices and allocates respective layer three (L3) addresses from an Internet Protocol (IP) network address prefix assigned to the Internet service provider network. Routes within the metro transport network, including an access router, ISP-facing provider edge routers and one or more peering routers, establish an EVPN within the metro transport network. The access router outputs, within the EVPN and to the peering router, an EVPN route advertisement that advertises network address reachability information of the subscriber devices (e.g., the IP network address prefix or MAC/IP address of the subscriber devices) on behalf of the Internet service provider network.
