A MEMS optical switch-based LiDAR beam steering unit may comprise an optical switching array comprising two or more translatable optical switch gratings. The two or more translatable optical switch gratings may be arranged in a foveal pattern. Each of the two or more translatable optical switch gratings may have an associated MEMS structure operative to selectively translate the optical switch grating between a first position and a second position, and a first waveguide associated with the translatable optical switch grating. The grating being in the first position may cause the grating to be sufficiently close to the first waveguide to produce a strong optical coupling between the grating and the first waveguide. The grating being in the second position may cause the grating to be sufficiently far from the first waveguide to produce a weak optical coupling between the grating and the first waveguide.

Foveal patterned optical switches for MEMS LiDAR beam steering unit

A computer-implemented method is described for detecting, identifying and locating an object feature in a ferromagnetic object. At least one hardware processor executes program instructions to: define a planned scan trajectory for scanning the ferromagnetic object with a sensor array comprising a plurality of magnetometer sensors, measure magnetic fields of the ferromagnetic object with the sensor array along an actual scan trajectory at locations adjacent to the ferromagnetic material to produce object scanning data representing magnetic characteristics of the ferromagnetic object along the actual scan trajectory. The actual scan trajectory includes deviation motion of the scanning array from the planned scan trajectory. The deviation motion is then compensated for to identify and locate the object feature in the ferromagnetic object. The compensation includes adjusting the object scanning data for the deviation motion and/or using a feature model that reflects the deviation motion.

Scanning magnetometry motion compensation

A method of identifying operational modes experienced by a user during a jump from an aircraft may comprise estimating a user altitude and a user descent rate, based on a set of navigation state data vectors. The method may further comprise determining that the user is ready to transition from a flight mode to a descent mode when the user altitude is above a jump altitude threshold, and a variation of the user altitude is below a predetermined altitude variation threshold. After determining that the user is ready to transition from the flight mode to the descent mode, the method further comprises determining that the user has transitioned from a flight mode to a descent mode when a user ground speed is below a ground speed threshold, and one or both of (i) a GNSS position error estimate, and (ii) the user descent rate estimate, indicates a jump signature.
