Remineralizing dental cements contain source(s) of calcium and phosphate ions, adhesive resin monomers, reinforcing base resin monomers, and catalysts able to initiate the polymerization of the adhesive and reinforcing base resin monomers. Such dental cements can be used as orthodontic cements, crown and bridge cements, adhesives, sealants, cavity liners, and protective coatings. The release of calcium and phosphate ions and, optionally, fluoride ions, protects tooth structure from demineralization, a precursor of tooth decay.

Remineralizing dental cements

A single solution bonding formulation for dental applications comprising a plurality of at least one self-polymerizable polyvinyl acidic monomer or at least two different polymerizable polyvinyl acidic monomers, a calcium phosphate filler, at least one photoinitiator, optionally an accelerator, optionally a solvent, and optionally a fluoride additive is provided. Additionally, a method for treating enamel, dentin, and/or pulp with the same single solution bonding formulation is provided. The single solution bonding formulation provides for the release of calcium, phosphate and/or fluoride ions which are sufficient in situ to form hydroxyapatite and/or fluorapatite.

Single solution bonding formulation

A pulp-capping and base/lining cement comprising the combination of paste 1 and either paste 2 or a powder, wherein paste 1 contains a carboxylated monomer, dicalcium phophate, and water; and paste 2 or the powder contains a polymerizable base monomer and tetracalcium phosphate. The cement is useful in the repair and/or restoration of dental lesions as well as repair and/or restoration of other calcium and calcium phosphorus containing parts of living organisms.

The use of polymerizable monomeric conditioning agents for treating the enamel and dentin of a tooth prior to application of a primer and subsequent application of a bonding resin, or a combination of a primer/bonding resin has been found to provide good shear bond strength on both moist and dry dentin. In addition, the contact angles provided by water on dentin conditioned with the polymerizable conditioners as compared to the non-polymerizable phosphoric acid are much lower, reflecting improved spreading over the surface of the tooth.
