A method for triggering a two-stage belt tensioner is provided, in which the second stage of the belt tensioner is triggered as a function of a crash severity and a sitting position. The crash severity is determined by a signal derived from an acceleration and determined during a collision, and the sitting position brings an influence to bear on the evaluation of this signal.

A method for triggering restraint devices in which at least one collision-indicating signal is generated. From the moment that a collision is detected, temporally defined crash phases are specified, and, for every crash phase, a crash type and a crash severity are determined from the signal. The appropriate restraint devices are triggered as a function of the crash severity and/or the crash type.

A method for triggering at least one restraint means, triggering signals from peripheral acceleration sensors being released by signals from centrally situated acceleration sensors. In this context, a release threshold is raised in the case of a detected misuse behavior, or the release for the triggering signals is blocked.
