The present application is directed to piezoelectric actuator devices. One embodiment of a piezoelectric actuator comprises a chamber diaphragm having a major surface. A piezoelectric transducer is positioned on the major surface of the chamber diaphragm. The piezoelectric transducer has a major surface having a first dimension which is smaller than a corresponding second dimension of the major surface of the chamber diaphragm, so that the piezoelectric transducer underlaps the chamber diaphragm. The underlap ratio of the first dimension to the second dimension ranges from about 0.70 to about 0.99.

A dryer assembly for drying a liquid ink image formed on a substrate comprising a housing defining a portion of a sheet moving path; a plenum positioned within the housing, the plenum including air flow and outlet means contiguous to the plenum permitting forced air to exit the plenum, the outlet being in the form of a plurality of moving openings adapted to direct flowing air through the openings to the liquid image, the openings moving relative to the image; and a substrate transport device for moving the substrate carrying the liquid ink image on a front side thereof through the housing and under the plurality of moving openings. The dryer assembly has particular use in an ink jet printing system.

Moving air jet image conditioner for liquid ink

A high shear ball check valve device is provided and is suitable for use in a liquid ink image producing machine to quickly and precisely control flow of liquid ink. The high shear ball check valve device includes a valve housing defining a valve chamber. The valve chamber has a desired cross-dimension, an inlet end, and an outlet end. The high shear ball check valve device also includes an inlet member that is connected to the inlet end of the valve housing and has an inlet opening and a ball seat and seal portion surrounding the inlet opening. The ball seat and seal portion has a desired first durometer hardness value. The high shear ball check valve device next includes a valve ball having a desired diameter and being located movably within the valve chamber, and an outlet opening located at the outlet end of the valve chamber. The outlet opening has a rectangular shape, and a size that is slightly greater than the diameter of the valve ball, for creating a backward fluid flow pattern that results in relatively high shear stress on the valve ball. The relatively high shear stress thereby quickly moves the valve ball away from the outlet opening and back against the ball seat and seal portion to shut off the inlet opening.

A dryer uses a two-phase drying system having a brief water condensation interval, followed by impinging parallel laminar recirculating hot air jets which impinge on wet ink to increase the copy rate of inkjet printing and to increase the quality of the printed image.

Hot air impingement drying system for inkjet images

An automatic document handler adapted to receive a stack of documents to be copied for feeding the documents seriatim to the platen of a copy machine and returning the copied documents to the stack. An air floation stack tray is provided to support the document stack, striations formed in the tray encourage laminar air flow thereover for improved air floation of the stack.
