An amorphous metal alloy strip is disclosed having a width greater than about one inch and a thickness less than about 0.003 inch, this alloy consists essentially of 77 to 80 atomic percent iron, 12 to 16 atomic percent boron and 5 to 10 atomic percent silicon with incidental impurities. The strip has a 60 cycle per second core loss of less than about 0.100 watts per pound at 12.6 kilogauss, saturation magnetization of at least 15 kilogauss, and a coercive force of less than about 0.04 oersteds. Such alloy is further characterized by increased castability and the strip produced therefrom exhibits at least singular ductility. A method of producing such optimum strip is also disclosed.

F. or more in a protective atmosphere to diffuse sufficient and controlled amounts of the comtaninant into the steel to produce a permanent pore stable up to 2100.degree. F. to effect heat resistant domain refinement and reduce core loss.

A method is provided for domain refinement of final texture annealed grain-oriented silicon steels by applying to the base coating a barrier coating for sealing the forsterite, removing portions of the base coating to expose a pattern of the underlying silicon steel, applying a metallic contaminant to the steel at least in the areas of the exposed steel which is free of thermal and plastic stresses, and thereafter annealing the steel having the barrier coating and contaminant thereon at time and temperature in a reducing atmosphere to diffuse sufficient and controlled amounts of the metallic contaminant and an element from the barrier coating into the exposed steel to produce a permanent pore to effect heat resistant domain refinement and reduced core loss.

An amorphous Fe-B-Si alloy and article made therefrom is provided having improved castability while maintaining good magnetic properties, ductility and improved thermal stability. Fe-B-Si alloys containing 0.1-4.0% Cr, in atomic percent, have improved castability and amorphousness. An alloy is provided generally consisting essentially of 6-10% B, 14-17% Si, 0.1-4.0% Cr, and the balance iron, and no more than incidental impurities. A method of casting an amorphous strip material from the alloy is also provided.

An apparatus for continuously casting metallic strip material includes a tundish, and a nozzle comprising a slotted element, with the slot having substantially uniform cross-sectional dimensions throughout the longitudinal extent thereof. Disposed outside the nozzle is a cooled casting surface movable past the nozzle in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the slot. The slot is defined between first and second lips of the nozzle which have inside surfaces facing one another at least at an inner portion of the slot. The facing inside surfaces diverge from one another at an outer portion of the slot. The first and second lips are further provided with bottom surfaces facing the casting surface at a standoff distance less than 0.120 inch.
