A radial impacting technique involves using a set of progressively larger radial impactors to pack a medullary canal in a radial direction toward the cortex. For revision cases, graft material, which may be either synthetic or bone graft material, is added into the medullary canal after the previously installed implant has been removed. Packing the medullary canal in the radial direction, as opposed to the conventional approach of packing in a distal direction, provides superior results. The radial impactors are preferably cannulated and may also have holes to assist in the removal of fluids from within the medullary canal. The profile impactors may be either cannulated or non-cannulated and prepare the medullary canal for receipt of the implant.

Methods and instruments for performing radial impacting

A method for planning surgery on a body portion is provided in the steps of gathering image data, storing the image data, reading the image data into a computer, generating a three-dimensional computer model of the body portion from the image data, identifying anatomical features relevant to the surgery, and defining at least one desired correction to anatomical structures to be accomplished by the surgery. Also, a method for performing surgery on a body portion is provided in the steps of loading surgical plan data into a computer, registering a three-dimensional computer model of the body portion stored in the surgical plan data to the body portion, providing at least one surgical tool, positioning the surgical tool relative to the body portion and performing the surgery. Further, a jig assembly is provided in the form of a femoral docking jig, a femoral contouring jig, and a tibial jig.

A modular knee joint prosthesis using variably sized components for joining a variably resected tibia bone and a femur bone, having a tibial platform defining peripheral edges on its bottom surface for engaging beveled edges of the plates or spacers. The platform has an upraised boss on a top surface for engaging a tibial insert which can be locked in place with a lock key. The tibial insert serves as an articulating surface for a femoral component. An implantable stem extends below the platform and may be complementarily joined to a second stem; the stems lock together using a Morse taper and a locking bolt. Full-sized or half-sized extension plates have beveled edges on a top surface to engage complementing edges on the bottom surface of the tibial base plate. The plates act as a spacer or cap to the resected tibia and act to distribute load or make up for bone deficits.

The splint for surgical operations on the knee comprises a member for holding the ankle and the foot, immobilizing the leg in a folded position in a substantially vertical plane, and a fastening means connecting the holding member to a stand enabling the splint to be rested on the operating table. The splint is articulated about a substantially horizontal pin permitting the holding member to rock in a vertical plane is fixed on the stand by means of a longitudinal slide groove made on the stand along the axis of projection of the leg. The slide groove allows travel and positioning of the fastening means. The stand located in the sterile region fits in a support rendered integral with the operating table and the fastening means comprises a substantially vertical pivot allowing lateral deflection of the holding member.
