A controller includes an engine controlling section and a motor-generator controlling section. The controller is configured to use the engine controlling section and the motor-generator controlling section to execute an intermittent stop control, a temperature increase control, an intermittent stop prohibition control, and a motoring control. The intermittent stop control automatically stops and restarts operation of an internal combustion engine. The temperature increase control increases the temperature of a filter in the exhaust passage to a temperature at which PM can be burned. The intermittent stop prohibition control prohibits stop of the operation of the internal combustion engine by the intermittent stop control until the temperature increase control is completed. The motoring control drives the output shaft of the internal combustion engine by the motor-generator, thereby forcibly rotating the internal combustion engine.

A control device is configured to control an engine to be started and stopped such that when a hybrid vehicle is required to output a vehicular required power smaller than an engine starting threshold value the control device operates to stop the engine and use only a motor generator to cause the vehicle to travel and when the vehicular required power exceeds the threshold value the control device operates to start the engine and use both the engine and the motor generator to cause the vehicle to travel. The engine starting threshold value is set to be higher when at least one of an amount of lifting the intake valve and a working angle on the intake valve controlled by a VVL device provided to the engine is small than when at least one of the amount and the angle is large.

A regenerative control unit performs regenerative control to perform electric power regeneration. When regenerative control is performed, a valve control unit controls a VVL device to limit an upper limit of at least one of an amount of lifting an intake valve and a working angle on the intake valve to be lower than when regenerative control is not performed. As a result, a hybrid vehicle allowing a power storage device to be charged in regenerative braking, can ensure engine braking force and also minimize degradation of the power storage device.
