An electrical rotating machine having a stator or a rotor with a core that includes a plurality of tapered pole pieces is a low loss electrical machine that results in improvements such as higher output power, higher torque and higher efficiency than a machine that does not have tapered pole pieces. The stator or the rotor with tapered pole pieces may be applied to a power train in automobiles, power tools, and various appliances. The core is constructed by winding an iron-based amorphous magnetic alloy ribbon to form a cylinder-shaped core, then heating, impregnating with resin, and machining by cutting the cylinder-shaped core to form a plurality of tapered pole pieces being separated in an alternating manner by a plurality of slots. The cores having an outside diameter of 50 mm-1200 mm, a tapered angle of 10&#xb0;-45&#xb0;, and a slot depth of 10 mm-210 mm are advantageous.

A ferromagnetic amorphous alloy ribbon includes an alloy having a composition represented by FeSiBCwhere 80.5&#x2266;a&#x2266;83 at. %, 0.5&#x2266;b&#x2266;6 at. %, 12&#x2266;c&#x2266;16.5 at. %, 0.01&#x2266;d&#x2266;1 at. % with a+b+c+d=100 and incidental impurities, the defect length along a direction of the ribbon's length being between 5 mm and 200 mm, the defect depth being less than 0.4&#xd7;t &#x3bc;m and the defect occurrence frequency being less than 0.05&#xd7;w times within 1.5 m of ribbon length, where t and w are ribbon thickness and ribbon width, respectively, and the ribbon in its annealed state and straight strip form of the ribbon, has a saturation magnetic induction exceeding 1.60 T, and exhibits a magnetic core loss of less than 0.14 W/kg when measured at 60 Hz and at 1.3 T induction level. The ribbon is suitable for use in transformer cores, rotational machines, electrical chokes, magnetic sensors and pulse power devices.

A ferromagnetic amorphous alloy ribbon, a method of fabricating a ribbon and a wound transformer core are provided. The ribbon includes an alloy of FeSiBCwhere 80.5&#x2266;a&#x2266;83 at. %, 0.5&#x2266;b&#x2266;6 at. %, 12&#x2266;c&#x2266;16.5 at. %, 0.01&#x2266;d&#x2266;1 at. % with a+b+c+d=100, and is cast from a molten state of the alloy, having a-surface tension of greater than or equal to 1.1 N/mi,. A defect length along a direction of the ribbon's length is between 5 mm and 200 mm, a defect depth less than 0.4 &#xd7;t &#x3bc;m and a defect occurrence frequency less than 0.05 &#xd7;w times within 1.5 m of ribbon length, where t is the ribbon thickness and w is the ribbon width in mm. The ribbon has a saturation magnetic induction exceeding 1.60 T and a magnetic core loss of less than 0.14 W/kg when measured at 60 Hz and at 1.3 T induction level in an annealed straight strip form, and a core magnetic loss of less than 0.3 W/kg and an exciting power of less than 0.4 VA/kg in an annealed wound transformer core form and is suitable for use in transformer cores, rotational machines, electrical chokes, magnetic sensors and pulse power devices.

The ribbon is suitable for transformer cores, rotational machines, electrical chokes, magnetic sensors, and pulse power devices.

An iron-based amorphous alloy and magnetic core with an iron-based amorphous alloy having a chemical composition with a formula FeBSiC, where 81&#x3c;a&#x2266;84, 10&#x2266;b&#x2266;18, 0&#x3c;c&#x2266;5 and 0&#x3c;d&#x3c;1.5, numbers being in atomic percent, with incidental impurities, simultaneously have a value of a saturation magnetic induction exceeding 1.6 tesla, a Curie temperature of at least 300&#xb0; C. and a crystallization temperature of at least 400&#xb0; C. When cast in a ribbon form, such an amorphous metal alloy is ductile and thermally stable, and is suitable for various electric devices because of high magnetic stability at such devices' operating temperatures.

An amorphous alloy-based magnetic core with reduced audible noise and a method of making the amorphous alloy-based magnetic core emanating low audible noise, including: placing the core with multiple layers of high strength tape on the core legs, wherein the tapes have a high tensile strength, high dielectric strength and high service temperature, resulting in reduced level of audible noise. When operated under optimum condition, the reduced level of audible noise is 6-10 dB less when compared with a same-size core that has been coated with resin instead.

The device has one or more electrical windings and is easily customized for specialized magnetic applications, e.g. for use as a transformer or inductor in power conditioning electronic circuitry employing switch-mode circuit topologies and switching frequencies ranging from 1 kHz to 200 kHz or more. The low core losses of the device, e.g. a loss of at most about 12 W/kg when excited at a frequency of 5 kHz to a peak induction level of 0.3 T, make it especially useful at frequencies of 1 kHz or more.
