The screen assemblyA includes the fresnel lens screen, a screen retainerand a light blocking member. The fresnel lens screenforms an image on the side of a front surfaceby image light Le incoming through a back surface. The screen retainerhas a back surfacewhose area is larger than the back surfaceand the front surfaceand which is opposed to the front surfaceto hold it, and a front surfacelocated on opposite side of the back surfaceto allow an image formed by the image light incoming through the back surfaceto be visible through the front surface. The screen retainerhas an optical transparency. The light blocking memberis arranged so as to surround respective side surfaces of the screenin the form of a frame. At least part of the light blocking memberis arranged so as to project to the side of the back surfaceof the screen.

Screen assembly and rear-projection type graphic display device

A projection type display device includes a image displaying element having image display areas for displaying a plurality of images respectively, a projection optical system having an emitting part for emitting projection light flux to the image display areas of the image displaying element, and a plurality of screens for displaying projected images by the projection light flux transmitted through the image display areas of the image displaying element. In the projection type display device, the image display areas are formed in respective areas in the image displaying element independent of each other. The projected images on the screens correspond to the image display areas, respectively. Each of the screens is arranged in such a position that the each of the screens is not overlapped with shadows of the other screens which are produced since the projection light flux is emitted from the emitting part to the screens.

Projection type display device and image displaying method

A light source device includes an optical elementhaving a first faceopposed to a solid light emitting element. A light source device comprises a waveguide, an electrodeless lamp, a probe, and conversing means. The waveguide is formed to contain a medium enabling a microwave to resonate and has a surface and an aperture cavity with an aperture opened at a predetermined position of the surface. The electrodeless lamp is loaded in the aperture cavity in a state where part of the electrodeless lamp is protruded from the surface of the waveguide so that the part of the electrode lamp emits light in response to applying the microwave to the electrodeless lamp. The probe supplies a high-frequency signal to the waveguide so that the high-frequency signal is converted to the microwave in the waveguide. The converging means is disposed on the surface of the waveguide to face the aperture cavity and utilizes all the light emitted from the part of the electrodeless lamp to converge the light.

Light source device and image displaying apparatus using the same

A white light emitted from a light source is homogenized by an integrator optical system, transmitted through a color polarizer () to be turned into an R light and a G light of a P polarized light, and transmitted through a color polarizer () to be turned into a G light of an S polarized light and an R light of a P polarized light. These R light and G light are subjected to light modulation in a reflection type spatial light modulation element for G and a reflection type spatial light modulation element for R arranged at unequal distances from a polarization split surface of a polarizing beam splitter (), and emitted from a projection lens having an axial chromatic aberration corresponding to the unequal distances.

Projection display apparatus

An image display apparatus includes a diaphragm () arranged at a pupil position. The shape of an aperture of the diaphragm () is similar to the shape of a light source image formed by an illuminating optical system at the pupil position. An area varying mechanism () varies the area of the aperture of the diaphragm () in response to a focal length varying operation of a projection lens (). This prevents an excessive opening from being formed around a light source image cast by the illuminating optical system, thereby preventing the deterioration of displayed images due to unwanted light that may pass through the excessive opening.

Image projection display apparatus

An Illumination apparatus according to the present invention is provided with a light source, a mirror that reflects a light emitted by the light source and converts it to a convergent light beam, and a collimator lens that collimates the convergent light beam reflected by the mirror to a collimated light beam. Here, the collimator lens is provided with a region positioned at a central region with respect to an optical axis and having a negative focal distance, and a plurality of concentric annular regions centering with respect to the optical axis and having focal distances different from each other.

Illumination apparatus

A color separating/light guiding optics comprises two independent dichroic mirrors, reflection mirrors and correcting lenses. A horizontal plane region occupied by these optical components is entirely involved in a horizontal plane region occupied by a light modulating/color compositing/image projecting optics. A red beam is guided along a detoured optical path extending across a dead space below a projection lens. Although the optical path length of the red beam becomes longer than those of the blue beam and the green beam, the detoured optical path provides a sufficient space for installing the correcting lenses. The substantial optical path lengths of three primary color beams can be equalized with each other by the provision of these correcting lenses.

Projection-type display apparatus having polarized beam splitters and an illuminating device

A color filter which, in a reflection type color picture projector using a polarized light component as a projection light, improve the utilization factor of light and a color picture display device using the same color filter are provided. The color filter 3 using a transmission type hologram diffracts and spectroscopically separates P polarized light components related to respective primary colors and condenses them to pixel electrodes 13r, 13g, and 13b on the side of an LCD panel 1. A reflection light which is modulated by an optical modulator 16 on the side of the LCD panel 1 and becomes S polarized light component is incident on the color filter 3. The color filter 3 transmits the S polarized light component and uses it as the projection light. Since the color filter 3 can diffract a P polarized light component at diffraction efficiency of about 100% while restricting the diffraction efficiency of S polarized light component to about 3%, which is substantially advantageous compared with diffraction of S polarized light component, the utilization factor of light can be improved

Color filter and color picture display device using the same

In an illumination device used for a color image projector, indefinitely polarized light beams from a light source are separated by a polarization beam splitter into two linearly polarized light beams respectively having polarized planes perpendicularly intersecting to each other. One of the two polarized light beams is made to have the same polarized plane as that of the other by a 1/2.lambda. wave-plate. Second and third lens arrays are respectively placed at positions where an optical distance from a first lens array to the second lens array is the same as that from the first lens array to the third lens array. Principal rays of luminous fluxes outputted from microlenses of the second and third lens arrays are made to be parallel to each other and to a superimposing lens. The illumination light outputted from the superimposing lens illuminates a display device in a telecentric optical system using optically a visual field lens. The illumination light has a large cone angle in a diffraction direction of a hologram color filter provided on an LCD display device compared with that in a direction perpendicular to the diffraction direction.

This invention provide an image display apparatus having an illumination optical system for effectively illuminating a plurality of areas on a single common plane uniformly by shortening optical paths of the optical system and a new projection optical system capable of reducing the overall size of the optical system and a production cost thereof. The illumination optical system has an ellipse mirror for collecting light beams generated from a light source, a first lens group for suppressing divergence of the light beams reflected from a light collecting area of the ellipse mirror, a plural color filters for separating the light beams into three color light beams and altering a path of each of the three color light beams, and a second lens group for illuminating objects disposed on the single common plane by focusing the separated three color light beams thereon.
