The invention is directed to an electroluminescent display device in which a first planarization insulating film need not be used so that a manufacturing cost reduces, and a display defect caused by a cut in an organic EL layer or moisture absorption at a step portion is prevented. An R color filter layer, a G color filter layer, and a B color filter layer are so formed that end portions of the adjacent R, G, and B color filter layers overlap each other. The R color filter layer, the G color filter layer, and the B color filter layer serve as a first planarization insulating film. For planarization, the end portions of the color filter layers overlap each other. For reducing a step height of an overlapping portion, the end portions of the color filters are formed in a tapered shape.

Electroluminescent display device

Each pixel includes a region where a lower reflection film is not present. In each pixel, there is a region where a microcavity structure is formed between a counter electrode and a lower reflection film and another region where the microcavity structure is not formed. The regions differentiated in cavity length can differently enhance the peak wavelength so as to improve the viewing angle dependence. Furthermore, in each of R, G, and B light emitting pixels, the area ratio of a region where the microcavity structure is present and another region where the microcavity structure is not present can be adjusted so as to eliminate the differences caused by the microcavity structure.

Organic EL panel

Disclosed is a light-emitting display having a plurality of pixels wherein each pixel comprises a light-emitting device () having a light-emitting element layer which is formed between a first electrode and a second electrode and contains at least a light-emitting layer. An insulating layer () is formed between the light-emitting device () and a surface of a first or second substrate on the viewing side of the display, and the insulating layer () is provided with recesses and projections in at least one or more pixel regions, thereby forming an optical path length adjusting portion (). By forming such an optical path length adjusting portion () in a pixel region, there is an increase in the interference conditions for the light emitted from the light-emitting device () to the outside, thereby averaging the interference.

Light-emitting display

A light-emitting device may include a light-emitting element, a microresonator, and a color filter. The light-emitting element may include first and second electrode and an emissive layer provided between the first and second electrodes, and may emit light of a predetermined color when a voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes to allow a current to flow in the emissive layer. The microresonator may repetitively reflect light of a predetermined color emitted from the emissive layer within an interval having an optical length corresponding to the predetermined color, and thereby intensifying and selecting the light of the predetermined color. The color filter may pass the light intensified and selected by the microresonator and further limiting to light having a wavelength of the predetermined color.

Organic EL element and organic EL panel

The invention is directed to repairing of a defective portion caused by a short circuit without generating a dark spot by a pin hole. Laser beams are irradiated to an irradiating region set in a peripheral region of a foreign substance. This prevents damaging of an organic EL element which the foreign substance adheres to and formation of the pin hole. By irradiating laser beams to the peripheral region at a distance from the foreign substance, energy of the laser beams spreads concentrically around the irradiating region, and is also supplied to the foreign substance indirectly. Therefore, the high resistive region can be formed between an anode layer and a cathode layer so that the defective portion caused by the short circuit by the foreign substance can be repaired.

Laser repairing method of electroluminescent display device

A green pixel is provided with an organic EL element having an emissive layer which emits green light, but is not provided with a color filter. On the other hand, red and blue pixels comprise organic EL elements having an emissive layer which emits white light. The white emissive layer is composed of a lamination of an orange organic emissive layer and a blue organic emissive layer. The red and blue pixels are further provided with red and blue color filters, respectively, to limit the emitted white light to those colors.

A frame-shaped groove is formed on a panel adhering part of a sealing board, a paste including low melting point glass powder is buried in the groove, and a frame-shaped glass paste layer is formed. A solvent included in the glass paste layer is volatilized for solidification, and a low melting point glass frame is provided. Then, the low melting point glass frame protruded on the surface of the sealing board is removed, and the surface of a plane including the surface of the adhering part of the sealing board is flattened. A low heat resistant layer is formed on the flattened adhering plane of the sealing board. The sealing board is arranged to face an element board at a prescribed interval, laser beams are applied on the low melting point glass frame through the element board, and the area is heated. Thus, the low melting point glass rises, and the sealing board is welded with the element board.

Display panel manufacturing method and display panel

A metal solder layer is formed on a sealing substrate through patterning. A pixel substrate is overlapped to the sealing substrate and the solder layer is irradiated with laser so that the sealing substrate and the pixel substrate are connected. Because the joining is achieved by the metal solder layer, intrusion of moisture into the inside space can be reduced. In addition, the solder layer can be very precisely formed through patterning.

An electroluminescence panel having an electroluminescence element in each pixel, wherein the electroluminescence element comprises an emissive element layer having at least a light emitting function between a reflective film and a semi-transmissive film which is provided opposing the reflective film and have portions having different cavity lengths in one pixel, the cavity length being a distance between the reflective film and the semi-transmissive film. Such a structure can be realized, for example, by changing a thickness of a transparent electrode which is a lower electrode of the element. Because peak wavelength that can be intensified can be varied among regions in one pixel having different cavity lengths, a viewing angle dependency is improved.

Electroluminescence panel

A semi-transmissive film is provided underneath a transparent electrode of an organic EL element. The optical length of the interval between the upper surface of the semi-transmissive film and the lower surface of a counter electrode serving as a reflective layer is configured such that this interval functions as a microresonator for selecting light having a specific wavelength. A color filter is provided underneath the semi-transmissive film to further restrict the wavelength of light which has passed through the semi-transmissive film.

A semi-transmissive film is provided underneath a transparent electrode of an organic EL element. The optical length of the interval between the upper surface of the semi-transmissive film and the lower surface of a counter electrode serving as a reflective layer is configured such that this interval functions as a microresonator for selecting light having a specific wavelength. Further, a light-shielding film is provided in a position corresponding to the peripheral portion of the semi-transmissive film, so as to prevent light having a different color from being ejected due to non-uniformity in the optical length.

When the orientation of liquid crystal molecules in a pixel are divided by an orientation divider, a boundary of the orientation is produced at any part of the pixel. A drain signal line () is formed to overlap with the boundary so that a light-shielding region in the pixel is decreased and an aperture ratio can be improved. Leakage of light caused when the orientation is disturbed can be shielded by the drain signal line (), and contrast can be enhanced. The orientation divider can be an orientation control window (), an orientation control slope () or the like.

In an electroluminescence element, a layered structure is employed for an upper electrode including a first upper conductive layer formed through evaporation, a buffer layer, and a second upper conductive layer formed through sputtering. By interposing the buffer layer between the first and second upper conductive layers, damages to a light emitting element layer formed below the upper electrode and containing an organic material or the like having a low resisting characteristic against sputtering environment can be prevented while a high level of a charge injection efficiency to the light emitting element layer is maintained for charges such as electrons and holes, and, at the same time, a conductive layer can be formed with superior coverage and uniformity, to a sufficient thickness, and with superior productivity. The buffer layer may have a multi-layer structure.
