When a pitch composition prepared by mixing 100 parts by weight of mesophase pitch with 10 to 1,000 parts by weight of coal tar pitch, is heat-treated at a temperature of 500&#xb0; C. or higher, it is possible to produce a high-density coke at a high yield while avoiding the foaming of the mesophase pitch. In addition, when the coke is graphitized at a temperature of 2,000&#xb0; C. or higher, it is possible to obtain an artificial graphite having a high graphitization degree. Further, when the coke is first pulverized and then graphitized at a temperature of 2,000&#xb0; C. or higher, it is possible to obtain a high-crystallinity graphite powder which can be suitably used as a carbon material for a negative electrode of non-aqueous solvent type secondary battery having a high discharge capacity and a high charge-discharge efficiency.

Self-adhesive carbonaceous grains for use in the manufacture of high-density and high-strength carbon artifacts containing 0.5-1.5 wt % of a quinoline-soluble but pyridine-insoluble component and at least 97 wt % of a quinoline-insoluble component and which are prepared by heat-treating in a nonoxidizing atmosphere a mesophase pitch that is obtained by polymerizing condensed polycyclic hydrocarbons or substances containing them in the presence of a superacid consisting of hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride. The carbonaceous grains are molded and the mold is baked at a sufficient temperature to achieve its carbonization, with the heating rate being not more than 20.degree. C./h in the temperature range from 400 .degree. to 600.degree. C. In this way, high-density and high-strength carbon artifacts showing a homogeneous fine mosaic texture of optical anisotropy can be efficiently manufactured in high carbon yield.

Self-adhesive carbonaceous grains for use in the production of high density carbon artifacts and high performance carbon-carbon composites are made by processes such as oxidation and heat treatment of specific mesophase pitches. The present carbonaceous grains exhibit excellent binding properties, shape stability when molded, and high density with higher carbonization yield, providing very high strength artifacts when their properties fall within the specific range of properties defined by their H/C and O/C values. High density carbon artifacts can be easily obtained by molding the grains and carbonizing or graphitizing the same.

A process for making carbon fiber reinforced materials which not only have desirable qualities which include high strength, high heat resistance, chemical resistance, wear resistance and lightweightness but also which are produced in a short time and at low cost. The process includes the steps of impregnating a carbon fiber assembly with a melt of mesophase pitch or mixing short carbon fibers with the mesophase pitch, shaping the pitch-impregnated assembly or the pitch/short carbon fiber mixture, and firing the same. The process requires that the mesophase pitch used in the process be almost 100% of an optical anistropic phase as examined under a polarizing microscope; have a softening point of no higher than 350.degree. C. and be capable of being carbonized in a yield of at least 70% when gradually heated to a temperature of about 600.degree. C. in an inert gas atmosphere and then held at that temperature for two hours.

Process for producing carbon fiber reinforced carbon materials

Process for producing a copper plated resin article by forming a uniform copper coating having excellent adhesive strength on a fiber-reinforced or unreinforced thermoplastic or thermosetting resin article having a heat deformation temperature higher than 165.degree. C. The resin article is heated along with a source of copper formate under a reduced pressure or in a non-oxidative atmosphere to a temperature in the range above 165.degree. C. but lower than the heat deformation temperature of the resin article. The process makes it possible to produce a resin article having formed thereon a copper layer having an excellent adhesive strength by a very simple manner, and the resin article thus obtained can be used in various industrial fields.
