A package of carbon filament yarn having no slipover tendency upon unwinding thereof, in which a yarn trace formed by a traverse is repeated every n cycles at a predetermined shifting ratio in a range of 50% to 150% relative to the yarn width, n being a positive integer of not more than 9. The package can be obtained by using a conventional spindle drive winder under a selected winding ratio and winding tension.

Disclosed is a process for producing carbon fibers comprising providing cooling rollers in a 240.degree. to 400.degree. C. oxidative atmosphere, heating a precursor composed of continuous filaments in said oxidative atmosphere while intermittently and repeatedly bringing the precursor into contact with the cooling rollers to thereby convert the precursor to oxidized fibers and carbonizing the resulting oxidized fibers in an inert atmosphere of at least 800.degree. C.

Process for producing carbonizable oxidized fibers and carbon fibers

An improved process for manufacturing high-grade and high-quality graphite fibers by the steps of (a) heating carbon fibers from acrylic fibers in an initial heating zone while exposed to an atmosphere of inert gas having a maximum temperature from about 1700.degree. C. to 1900.degree. C., and (b) then heating the resulting fibers in a subsequent heating zone while exposed to an atmosphere of inert gas having a maximum temperature from 2300.degree. C. to 2700.degree. C.

Process for continuous graphitization of graphitizable precursor fibers

The surface of a carbon fiber is treated to improve the strength of its bond with a matrix. The fiber is made an anode by connecting it electrically with the anode current input terminal of an electrolytic treatment bath containing an electrolyte and having a cathode. The fiber is subjected to electrolysis in the bath. The relative distance between the fiber and the cathode in the bath decreases as the distance from the anode current input terminal along the fiber is increased.
