A buffer unit receives a sheet and temporarily holds a predetermined number of sheets so as to be overlaid on one another. A stacking unit stacks the predetermined number of sheets conveyed toward a first direction. A moving unit comes into contact with an uppermost sheet among the predetermined number of sheets stacked on the stacking unit and moves the uppermost sheet further toward the first direction. A regulating unit comes into contact with an end portion of the stack of sheets on the stacking unit to regulate the position of the stack of sheets. An image forming apparatus includes feeding, conveying, and separating members, and detecting, image forming, and control units. The feeding member feeds a recording material placed on a tray. The separating member and the conveying member separate recording materials at a nip. The detecting unit detects that the recording materials have been fed to the nip. The image forming unit forms an image on fed recording material. The control unit switches between a first and second control. Under the first control, the feeding member starts feeding a recording material placed on the tray, and ends feeding before a recording material trailing end passes through the feeding member. Under the second control, the feeding member starts feeding a recording material placed on the tray, and ends feeding after a recording material trailing end passes through the feeding member when the detection unit detects that the recording materials are fed to the nip.

This invention has as its object to improve an image formation throughput. An image forming apparatus of this invention times a time required until an image formation is ready to start after a reference signal is output, and executes the image formation when the image formation is ready to start (for example, initial processes are complete). An image forming apparatus detects a oscillating state of a oscillation system with a oscillation detector and controls oscillation of the oscillation system such that the oscillation system oscillates a reflective member in a balanced steady state by adjusting a drive force of a drive unit with one or more drive control parameter values on the basis of the detection result obtained by the oscillation detector. When the balanced steady state is detected, the drive control parameter values are stored and are used when an exposure unit is reactivated.
