A method of controlling an optical amplifying system that processes an optical signal with the PAM4 mode is disclosed. The optical amplifying system includes a variable optical attenuator (VOA) and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The VOA attenuates the optical signal such that a maximum optical power thereof corresponding to one of the physical levels of the PAM4 signal becomes equal to a preset optical level for which the SOA may be linearly operable. The SOA may amplify the thus attenuated optical signal with a fixed optical gain.

Method of controlling semiconductor optical amplifier and optical amplifying apparatus

An optical transmitter device is disclosed. The optical transmitter device includes an optical integrating device, a carrier, and a thermo-electric cooler (TEC). The carrier has a top surface and a back surface opposite to the top surface. The carrier includes an insulating slab and a metal plate attached to the insulating slab. The metal plate has thermal conductivity better than thermal conductivity of the insulating slab. The insulating slab forms the top surface of the carrier that provides an interconnection thereon. The back surface mounts the optical integrating device thereon. The TEC faces the carrier and mounts the carrier thereon. The carrier has a base overlapped with the TEC and an extension not overlapped with the TEC, the extension mounting the optical integrating device thereon.

Optical transmitter device

A method to control an amplifying unit including a variable optical attenuator VOA and a semiconductor optical amplifier SOA is disclosed. The method first sets the attenuation of the VOA in a value realizable in the VOA and the optical gain of the SOA in a value where the SOA may operate in an optimum range. The method then gradually reduces the attenuation of the VOA as detecting the intensity of the beam output from the amplifying unit. When the intensity is still less than a target one even when the VOA shows no attenuation, the optical gain of the SOA is gradually increased to a value by which the intensity of the output beam becomes the target one.

Method of controlling variable optical attenuator and semiconductor optical amplifier, and optical amplifying unit implementing the same

An optical amplifying apparatus and a method to control the same are disclosed. The apparatus includes a semiconductor device that integrates a variable optical attenuator (VOA) with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The VOA evaluates the optical power of an incident beam from a photocurrent generated therein. The attenuation of the VOA and the optical gain by the SOA are optionally determined based on the detected input power.

Optical amplifying unit comprising a semiconductor optical amplifier and a variable optical attenuator and method to control the same

An optical receiver module that provides a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is disclosed. The optical receiver module provides the SOA in another housing and a photodiode (PD) enclosed in another housing. The housing for the SOA and the other housing for the PD are fixed as interposing a coupling unit therebetween, which is rigidly fixed to those housings. The coupling unit has a bore that passes light output from a facet of the SOA and received by the PD. A feature of the coupling unit is that a width or diameter of the bore of the coupling unit is smaller than widths of respective housings along a direction perpendicular to the optical axis of the light.

An optical amplifying unit that enhances the flexibility of the installation within the system is disclosed. The optical amplifying unit includes a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a housing that encloses the SOA. The housing provides a front wall with a front window that passes an optical axis coming from the SOA. The optical amplifying unit further provides a front coupling unit directly fixed to the front wall without interposing any optical fibers. The optical coupling unit has the optical receptacle function to pluggably receive an external optical plug.

A method to control an optical receiver implemented with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is disclosed. The SOA has a p-n junction operable in a PD mode when it is supplied with a zero or reverse bias. The SOA detects the magnitude of the incoming light and the driving current supplied thereto is adjusted based on thus detected magnitude of the incoming light such that the outgoing light provided to the PD has a magnitude within a preset range.

An optical receiver includes a semiconductor optical amplifier configured to amplify wavelength multiplexed light, an optical demultiplexer configured to demultiplex the wavelength multiplexed light amplified by the semiconductor optical amplifier into light of a plurality of signals having different wavelengths, a plurality of light-receiving elements configured to receive the signal light obtained by demultiplexing of the optical demultiplexer, a detector configured to detect an intensity of the wavelength multiplexed light of a previous stage of the optical demultiplexer, a memory configured to store an upper limit value of a drive current of the semiconductor optical amplifier corresponding to a detection result of the detector, and a controlling the drive current of the semiconductor optical amplifier by referring an output of the detector and the upper limit value.

Optical receiver, optical reception module and method for controlling an optical receiver

A control method of a semiconductor optical amplifier includes: controlling a driving current of the semiconductor optical amplifier in a region where a light output intensity decreases in accordance with increasing of the driving current, a drive current in the region being higher than a drive current in a region where a light output intensity increases in accordance with increasing of the driving current.
