A heating device includes a rotatable film, a heater disposed inside the film and including a substrate that extends along a first direction and having two surfaces opposite to each other, and a heater element on one of the surfaces of the substrate, and a heat conductor including a first portion contacting the other surface of the substrate, and a second portion that is adjacent to the first portion in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction and does not contact the other surface of the substrate. A width of the second portion is wider than the heater element in the second direction.

According to one embodiment, a fixing device includes a tubular body, a heater unit, a frame, and a guide member. The heater unit is inside the tubular body and contacts the tubular body. The frame supports the heater unit. The guide member is on a side opposite the heater unit with the frame therebetween. The guide member includes a plurality of contact portions which are spaced from each other in a longitudinal direction that parallels an axial direction of the tubular body. A first contact portion is located in an end portion of the guide member. The second contact portion is located in a central portion of the guide member. The second contact portion has an effective heat transfer coefficient with respect to the tubular body that is less than that of the first contact portion with respect to the tubular body.

A fixing device includes a tubular member extending in an axial direction, a substrate, and a support. The substrate has a first surface facing toward an inner surface of the tubular member in a first thickness direction. The holder has a plurality of support portions that contact an end of the first heating region and an end of the second heating region along the direction perpendicular to the transport direction, and a plurality of non-contacting portions that do not contact the end of the first heating region and the end of the second heating region between the plurality of support portions, the end of the second heating region contacts one of the plurality of support portions at a side in the direction perpendicular to the transport direction, and the end of the second heating region faces to one of the plurality of non-contacting portions at the other side in the direction perpendicular to the transport direction.

The heater is positioned on an inner side of a tubular body and includes a substrate that supports a heat generating body. The substrate includes a first region. According to an embodiment, a fixing device includes a cylindrical body that rotates about an axial direction and a heater that heats the cylindrical body. The heater includes a substrate with a length direction matching the axial direction. The substrate has a first portion with a width in a width direction that is greater than a width of a second portion in the width direction. A first heating element is on a central portion of the substrate overlapping with the second portion. A first temperature sensing element is at a position along the axial direction that does not overlap with the second portion.

An image processing apparatus includes an image forming unit configured to form an image on a sheet, a heating device including a belt that contacts the sheet and a plurality of heating elements for heating the belt, a pressure roller configured to press the sheet against the belt, a voltage detection circuit configured to measure a voltage applied to the heating elements, and a controller configured to determine whether at least one of the heating elements is abnormal according to a voltage drop value that is based on voltages measured by the voltage detection unit before and after the plurality of heating elements is energized.

A fixing unit or device that can be used in an image forming apparatus includes a first heater element that is formed of a material that increases in electrical resistance with increases in temperature. A controller of the fixing unit is configured to vary a duty ratio of electric power applied to the first heater element during a start-up operation in which the temperature of the first heater element is raised to a target operating temperature. By varying the duty ratio during the start-up operation, changes in the resistance of the first heater element with the heating can be compensated. For example, the duty ratio can be increased during the course of the start-up to achieve the target operating temperature faster.
