A touch panel includes n first line electrodes (n is an integer of 2 or greater) to which pulses are applied, m second line electrodes (m is an integer of 2 or greater) for use in detection, the second line electrodes being arranged to cross the first line electrodes, and a pulse generating circuit configured to apply pulses, in a selected order, to nfirst line electrodes (nis an integer of at least 1 and not greater than n) selected from among the n first line electrodes. A touched position on the touch panel is detected by detecting a change in capacitance between one of the first line electrodes and one of the second line electrodes.

A coordinate detection apparatus includes: electrode arrays each including first/second/third electrodes extending in a first direction; and a processing unit. The first electrode includes first/second regions larger/smaller in dimension, with respect to the first direction, in parallel with a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. The second/third electrodes are smaller/larger in dimension, with respect to the first direction, in parallel with the second direction, and are opposed to the first/second regions in the second direction. The first/second/third electrodes are arranged in the second direction. Each electrode array outputs a capacitance value corresponding to a distance between it and a detection target. The processing unit calculates total sums (first/second/third values) of capacitance values of the respective first/second/third electrodes, and a sum of these total sums, and detects a position coordinate based on a different capacitance ratio depending on whether the second value is above or below the third value.

Provided is a capacitance sensor including: a first electrode including a first region gradually larger in height with respect to a width direction parallel to a first direction in parallel with a second direction orthogonal to the first direction, a second region gradually smaller in height with respect to the width direction, and a third region causing the first and second regions to be opposed; a second electrode opposed to the first region in the second direction, and gradually smaller in height with respect to the first direction in parallel with the second direction; a third electrode opposed to the second region in the second direction and gradually larger in height with respect to the first direction in parallel with the second direction; and a support body supporting electrode groups including the first to third electrodes while connected via the third region, and arranging those groups along the second direction.

Capacitance sensor and information input apparatus

A sensor apparatus includes a first capacitance element, a second capacitance element, a ground circuit, and a signal processing circuit. The first capacitance element has a first capacitance. The second capacitance element includes a first electrode and a second electrode that form a second capacitance larger than the first capacitance. The ground circuit includes a third electrode arranged adjacently to the first electrode, and converts the second capacitance into a third capacitance smaller than the second capacitance by connecting the third electrode to a ground potential. The signal processing circuit processes a first signal output from the first capacitance element based on a change of the first capacitance, and a second signal output from the second capacitance element based on a change of the third capacitance.
