A functionalized polymer includes a polymer chain carrying at least one functional group selected from alkyl, dialkyl and cycloalkyl amine radicals having the general formula ##STR1## and cyclic amine radicals having the general formula ##STR2## where R.sub.1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl having from 1 to about 12 carbon atoms, and R.sub.2 is an alkylene, substituted alkylene, oxy- or N-alkylamino-alkylene group having from about 3 to about 16 methylene groups. The invention also provides products based upon such polymers.

Amine containing polymers and products therefrom

A rubber composition having good breaking properties, high tan.delta., good wear resistance and a method for preparing a copolymer used in the rubber composition. The copolymer is a butadiene-styrene copolymer prepared in the presence of an organopotassium compound, an oxolanyl alkane and an organolithium initiator compound. The copolymer may be modified. A vulcanite of the rubber composition including 20 parts or more of the copolymer of the present invention has good properties.

A process for preparing a polymer comprises polymerizing a conjugated diene monomer and/or a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon monomer in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of or in the absence of a randomizer by using a lithium polymerization initiator which is formed by bringing an organolithium compound and at least one secondary amine compound into contact with each other in the polymerization system in the presence of at least said monomer, wherein the polymerization conversion at the time of contact is less than 5%. The secondary amine is an amine compound having two hydrocarbon groups bonded to N or an imine compound in which an NH group and a saturated or unsaturated cyclic structure group form a cyclic structure. The cyclic structure group comprises a hydrocarbon group as the ring member and may also comprise N or O. The method of production uses the initiator which does not require separate preparation of the initiator, shows excellent reproducibility, allows for the evaluation of accuracy of concentration and realizes high effective initiator concentration. The high molecular weight polymer produced by the method has a narrow molecular weight distribution; is controllable; has a highly reproducible molecular weight and microstructure; exhibits excellent coupling properties based on the living polymerization and provides low hysteresis loss properties.

A rubber composition having good physical properties such as breaking properties, wear strength and grip properties, and good processability at the same time is suitable for a high performance tire. A nitrogen containing polymer with a weight average molecular weight of 70.times.10.sup.4 to 250.times.10.sup.4 is compounded with 60 to 200 phr of carbon black, a softener comprising 30 to 250 phr of a process oil and/or 5 to 100 phr of liquid polymer, and not more than 60 parts of another polymer.

A conjugated diene series rubber composition comprises 100 parts by weight of a diene series rubber containing at least 30 parts by weight of a particular modified styrene-butadiene copolymer rubber, and 30-80 parts by weight of a specified carbon black, and is excellent in strength at breakage, abrasion resistance and low fuel consumption after vulcanization.

A heat resistant pneumatic tire whose tread is composed of a rubber composition comprising, as a main rubber component, a modified, conjugated diene based polymer prepared by adding an .alpha., .beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently represent hydrogen atom, halogen atom, or an alkyl, alkenyl or allyl group having at most 5 carbon atoms, or a substituted alkyl, alkenyl or allyl group, to a conjugated diene based polymer in an amount within the range between 0.1% and 5.0% based on the weight of the conjugated diene based polymer. This tire is suitable for continuous running at high temperatures and maintains a good road-surface-grip performance even during such running.

There is provided a polyaniline having a thickness of 0.3 to 5 mm which is suitable for an electronic material, particularly for an electrode material in a cell. Also provided is a cell comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode and an electrolyte in which the polyaniline having a thickness of 0.3 to 5 mm is employed in at least one of the positive and negative electrodes, the cell having a high energy density and good cell performance stable for a long period of time.

A novel halogenated polybutadiene series elastomer is produced by reacting a polybutadiene series elastomer with a particular active halogen group-containing compound in the presence of a particular organic halogenating agent. The resulting halogenated polybutadiene series elastomer can be subjected to heat-resistant crosslinking with a particular polyvalent amine, and is suitable for the preparation of rubber compositions for tire requiring the heat resistance.
