An image pickup apparatus includes an image forming optical system having lens components and an image pickup unit, and the lens component is a lens having an object-side surface and an image-side surface that are in contact with air in an effective optical path, and the image forming optical system includes in order from an object side to an image side, an object-side lens component and an image-side lens component, and the image pickup unit has an image pickup surface curved to be concave toward the object side, and a surface nearest to the object of the object-side lens component has a concave shape portion which is concave shape toward the object side in a meridional direction, in at least an off-axis effective surface, and a surface nearest to the image of the image-side lens component is a curved surface.

The wide-angle optical system of the invention comprises, in order from its object side, a first lens group having negative refracting power and a second lens group having positive refracting power. The second lens group comprises, in order from the object side, a first cemented doublet lens, an aperture stop, a second cemented doublet lens and a first double-convex lens. The widest separation among axial air separations except a back focus provides an axial space for receiving the aperture stop. The optical system is divided into the first lens group and the second lens group with the second widest air separation as a boundary. Focusing is implemented by letting the whole optical system out. Wide-angle optical system, and imaging apparatus incorporating the same

An image pickup apparatus includes a taking optical system and an image pickup element. The taking optical system includes at least two zoom optical systems having the same focal length range. The distance between the optical axes of any two zoom optical systems among the plurality of zoom optical systems is substantially constant over a range from an incidence surface to an image pickup surface of the image pickup element. The plurality of zoom optical systems are arranged in such a way as to form images of an object respectively in different regions on the image pickup surface of the same image pickup element.
