A receiver receives an OFDM signal and performs the Fourier transform on the received OFDM signal. In the receiver, a first channel estimation subunit estimates channel characteristics at SP signal positions and interpolates the estimated channel characteristics in the time direction, whereas a second channel estimation subunit estimates channel characteristics at TMCC signal positions. A correlation calculation subunit performs an autocorrelation calculation on the output from the first channel estimation subunit, and performs a cross-correlation calculation on the output from the first channel estimation subunit and the output from the second channel estimation subunit. By using the results of the autocorrelation calculation and the cross-correlation calculation performed by the correlation calculation subunit, a control subunit controls a transfer function of an interpolation filter in a frequency interpolation subunit.

An OFDM reception device detects a time at which impulse noise occurs in a received OFDM signal, and specifies a start position candidate period that does not have intersymbol interference and is estimated to have a guard interval signal in a symbol. When setting a FFT window of an effective symbol length in a symbol duration of each symbol, if the impulse noise occurrence time is included in the symbol, the OFDM reception device determines a start position of the FFT window within a range of the start position candidate period so as to exclude the impulse noise occurrence time as much as possible.

A receiving device performs reception in a service period of a broadcast signal and switches to a power saving mode in a non-service period. The service period is composed of a first period during which an application data table of an MPE-FEC frame is transmitted and a second period, following the first period, during which an RS data table of the MPE-FEC frame is transmitted. An error correction unitperforms one of error correction that uses the whole RS data table according to MPE-FEC, and erasure correction that uses a same number of parity bytes as bytes having bit errors. For a data group composed of pieces of data each indicating channel characteristics of a scattered pilot signal position whose phase is adjusted by dividing scattered pilot signals included in an OFDM signal by a scattered pilot signal at the time of transmission, a carrier extension circuitinserts data having a same value as a value of data of a lower end into an outside of the lower end of a band, and inserts data having a same value as a value of data of an upper end into an outside of the upper end of the band. On the data group composed of 2pieces of data including the data inserted by the carrier extension circuit, IFFT processing by an IFFT circuit, noise removal processing by a noise removal filter, and FFT processing by a FFT circuitare performed. The data inserted by the carrier extension circuitis removed from the data group outputted from the FFT circuit, and the data group after the data removal is used for interpolation in a symbol direction.

The present invention aims to provide a reception apparatus that receives and demodulates a signal transmitted by using time-division multiplexing, with reduced power consumption. In detail, a receiving unit including a tuner operates to receive a signal only during a time period for which a desired signal is transmitted. The received signal is converted into digital data, and the digital data is stored into a memory. With the use of the digital data stored in the memory, a PLL performs all of the necessary operations from synchronization establishment to demodulation.

The OFDM signal receiving apparatus includes a plurality of receiving systems, and a diversity processing unit connected to the receiving systems and fed with sequences of data on sub-carriers demodulated by the respective receiving systems. At least one of the receiving systems includes an FFT circuit for Fast Fourier transforming, in parallel, only a sequence of data on 2sub-carriers contained in the OFDM signal received with a corresponding antenna, where X&#x3e;Z. The diversity processing unit performs a diversity process on sequences of data on sub-carriers, out of all the Y sub-carries, redundantly demodulated.

An OFDM modulation apparatus receives a signal composed of OFDM symbols each of which is composed of an effective symbol and a guard interval, generates K delayed signals by delaying the received signal by K effective symbol periods, generates a signal by adding up all the K delayed signals, generates a first correlation signal that shows a correlation between the received signal and the addition-result signal, generates K&#xd7;L second correlation signals from the first correlation signal, based on K&#xd7;L combinations of K effective symbol periods and L fractions used to indicate the guard interval period, detects one among the K&#xd7;L second correlation signals that indicates a largest correlation level, and detect periods of the effective symbol and the guard interval of the received signal in accordance with the detected second correlation signal.
