A flying head slider includes a slider body. The upstream or leading end of a bottom surface on the slider body is defined along a first datum line extending in the lateral direction of the slider body. The first datum line may be set perpendicular to the longitudinal centerline of the slider body. The upstream or leading end of the front air bearing surface is defined along a second datum line intersecting the first datum line at a predetermined inclined angle. As the incidence angle of an airflow colliding against a step defined at the leading end of the front air bearing surface gets decreased, the pitch angle of the slider body also gets decreased in the flying head slider during flight.

Flying head slider capable of avoiding collision when loaded

A pair of slits are defined in a slider body of a head slider so as to extend from a trailing end surface to the leading end on the slider body. A movable block is established in the slider body between the slits. The slits ensure the extent of movement for the movable block. Elongated plates enable a relative displacement between the movable block and a stationary block. A head element is mounted on a trailing end surface of the movable block. The thickness of a non-magnetic layer corresponds to the gap length of the head element. The gap length of the head element can easily be controlled based on deposition of the non-magnetic layer. The thickness of the non-magnetic layer can be reduced in a relatively facilitated manner, so that the gap length of the head element can easily be minimized.

Flying head slider capable of avoiding collision when loaded having an air clogging dished space

The present invention is aimed to provide a head suspension having a high resonant frequency, high shock resistance and low rigidity, which greatly contributes to an improvement of a magnetic disk apparatus. In an oscillation-type actuator, at least a part of a spring arm of the head suspension having a data reading/writing head slideris made of an anisotropic layer whose rigidity varies in accordance with a direction. In this case, the anisotropic layer is laminated so that the high rigidity modulus orientation direction is different according to layer.

Head suspension for swing arm actuator

A magnetic head assembly equipped with a slider having a magnetic head and a gimbal spring on which the slider is mounted with an adhesive. The gimbal spring is supported by beam portions of a load beam. A thin-film wiring pattern formed on the load beam extends to a surface of the gimbal spring. A tip of the wiring pattern acts as a terminal portion that is connected to input/output terminals integrally formed on the slider. The slider is locked on the gimbal spring by electrically conducting bonding and an adhesive. A plurality of dummy patterns having the same height as the wiring pattern are provided at a position corresponding to where the adhesive is dropped on the surface of the gimbal spring. The adhesive is placed in an area sandwiched by the dummy patterns on the gimbal spring.

A magnetic head assembly equipped with a slider and a gimbal spring to which the slider is secured with an adhesive agent. According to one aspect, at least one slit is formed in the gimbal spring opposing the adhesion surface of the slider, so that expansion and contraction of the gimbal spring caused by a change in the temperature is hardly transferred to the slider. According to a second aspect, the Young's modulus after hardening of the adhesive agent applied onto thee adhesion surface of the slider is selected to be smaller than about {fraction (1/13000)} of the Young's modulus of the slider material or of the gimbal spring material. According to the first aspect, therefore, the area of the gimbal spring on which the adhesive agent is applied is limited by the slit. According to the second aspect, the Young's modulus of the adhesive agent after hardening is so small that the warping amount of the slider caused by a change in the temperature lies within a predetermined range. The warping amount of the slider in the magnetic head assembly is hence suppressed to lie within an allowable range despite a change in the temperature, and floating performance of thee slider is stabilized.

Magnetic head suspension assembly with adhesion limiting structure

The head slider mounts a recording/reproducing element and flies over a recording medium with the airflow generated when the recording medium moves. The head slider comprises a slider body having an air inflow end and an air outflow end, a rail projected from the slider body to define an air bearing surface extended to the outflow end, a projection formed on the rail and between the inflow end and the outflow end, and a recess formed at the outflow end of the rail to make narrow the width of the rail. When the recording medium stops, the head slider and the recording medium are in contact at the projection and the air outflow end of the rail. Since the outflow end of the rail is narrow in width, the stiction can be prevented. Moreover, it is unnecessary to form a projection near the outflow end of the rail and thereby the flying height of the recording/reproducing element can be lowered to improve the recording/reproducing sensitivity.

Head slider

A head slider having a disk opposing surface, an air inlet end, and an air outlet end. The head slider includes a front rail formed on the disk opposing surface in the vicinity of the air inlet end, the front rail having an air bearing surface and a step surface lower in level than the air bearing surface; a transducer formed in the vicinity of the air outlet end; and a first groove for expanding air once compressed by the front rail to generate a negative pressure. The head slider further includes a second groove formed on the step surface near the air inlet end except opposite side portions of the step surface. The step surface reaches the air inlet end at the opposite side portions.

Negative pressure type head slider and disk drive employing same

A suspension has an extending end and the other end. A head IC chip mounting portion is provided between the extending end and the other end of the suspension. A head slider is loaded on a first surface of the suspension at a position on the side of the extending end with respect to the head IC chip mounting portion, the head slider integrally including a head. A head IC chip is mounted at the head IC chip mounting portion of the suspension. First wiring patterns extend along the suspension between a portion of the suspension, at which portion the head slider is loaded, and the head IC chip mounting portion. Second wiring patterns extend along the suspension between the head IC chip mounting portion and the other end of the suspension. The head IC chip is mounted at the head IC chip mounting portion in a condition in which a certain portion of the head IC chip is positioned on the side of a second surface of the suspension, which second surface is opposite to the first surface.

Head slider supporting device, disk device and suspension having thermal protection for head IC chip

A head slider, usually employed in a recording disk drive, comprises a chamfered vertex defined at a corner of a polygonal bottom surface surrounded by a contour separated from a contour of an air bearing surface. Even when the chamfered vertex collides with the surface of a recording disk, a scratch or damage may be hardly generated on the surface of the recording disk, as compared with a keen vertex. The recording disk drive employing the head slider may enjoy an improved shock resistance.

Head slider capable of improving shock resistance of recording disk drive

A suspension has an extending end and an other end. A head IC chip mounting portion is provided between the extending end and the other end of the suspension. A head slider is loaded on a first surface of the suspension at a position on the side of the extending end with respect to the head IC chip mounting portion, the head slider integrally including a head. A head IC chip is mounted at the head IC chip mounting portion of the suspension. First wiring patterns extend along the suspension between a portion of the suspension, at which portion the head slider is loaded, and the head IC chip mounting portion. Second wiring patterns extend along the suspension between the head IC chip mounting portion and the other end of the suspension. The head IC chip is mounted at the head IC chip mounting portion in a condition in which a certain portion of the head IC chip is positioned on the side of a second surface of the suspension, which second surface is opposite to the first surface.

Head slider supporting device, disk device and suspension

A rail is formed on a medium-opposed surface of a slider body in a flying head slider. An air bearing surface is defined on the upper surface of the rail, which faces the medium. Projections are formed on the medium-opposed surface. The projections serve to space the air bearing surface from a medium such as a recording disk when the slider body contacts the recording disk. A trailing end of the rail is narrowed laterally along the trailing end of the medium-opposed surface. Even when the slider body contacts the recording disk at the trailing end, in addition to the projections, the contact area between the slider body and the recording disk is reduced because of the narrowed trailing end. Since the rail is narrowed without changing its original thickness or height from the bottom base of the medium-opposed surface, no additional processing is required to form the air bearing surface.

A negative pressure air bearing slider including a first air bearing surface formed on the bottom of the slider body at the upstream position so as to extend in the lateral direction of the slider body, and a pair of second air bearing surfaces formed on the bottom of the slider body separately from the first air bearing surface at downstream positions spaced in the lateral direction so as to define an air stream passage therebetween. The second air bearing surfaces serve to generate positive pressures that are spaced apart at downstream positions where a transducer element is embedded in the slider body, so that the slider's stiffness to rolling action can be enhanced. The cooperation of the front and rear rails enables for the creation of a higher negative pressure.
