Magnetic storage media that include a multilayer structure are described. In general, the magnetic storage media include a substrate, an underlayer that includes a plurality of underlayer particles formed over the substrate, and a magnetic layer that includes a plurality of magnetic particles formed over the underlayer. The magnetic layer may define a saturated magnetization and thickness product less than or equal to approximately 1.00 memu per square centimeter, and the magnetic particles may be selected from the group consisting of magnetic platelet-shaped particles and magnetic particles with an aspect ratio less than or equal to approximately 1.5. In addition, the described magnetic storage media may exhibit minimal interlayer diffusion between the underlayer and magnetic layer. Reduced interlayer diffusion between different layers of a magnetic recording medium may result in an improved magnetic recording surface for recording and storing data.

Barium ferrite magnetic storage media

A magnetic recording medium including a non-magnetic substrate and a magnetic coating. The non-magnetic substrate defines a front side and a backside. The magnetic coating is formed over the front side and is characterized by an Abrasivity Index of not greater than 350 microinches. In one preferred embodiment, the magnetic coating includes a lower layer formed on the front side of the substrate, and an upper layer formed over the lower layer. In this regard, the upper layer includes a magnetic metal particle dispersed in a binder and otherwise provides the Abrasivity Index. In another embodiment, the magnetic recording medium is a DLT tape.

Magnetic recording tape media having low abrasivity and reliable media performance

A magnetic recording medium including a non-magnetic substrate, a back coat, a lower layer, and a magnetic upper layer. The substrate defines a front side and back side, with the back coat being formed on the back side. The lower layer is disposed over the front side of the substrate and includes a primary powder material and conductive carbon black material dispersed in a binder. The primary lower layer powder material comprises particles having a coercivity of less than 300 Oe coated with an electroconductive material. The magnetic upper layer is disposed over the lower layer and includes a magnetic powder dispersed in a binder.

Magnetic recording medium with dual layer front coating and method of manufacture

A multi-layer magnetic recording medium and a method for making a multi-layered magnetic recording media as described. The recording medium has magnetic inner layer with magnetic particles having a specific squareness ratio and saturation magnetization which results in superior high frequency output and improved overwrite characteristics. The method for making a magnetic recording medium involves controlled, partial drying of the inner layers to avoid intermixing of the respective layers while facilitating efficient fabrication.
