A collective content consisting of a plurality of partial contents holding license information including a use condition can be appropriately used according to the use condition contained in the license information in each of the partial contents. A content use control device includes an input/output I/F, license generation unit, output control unit, content reproduction unit, and use control unit. The partial content holding the license information including the use condition is inputted via the input/output I/F. License information is assigned to each of the partial contents inputted and constituting a collective content. Single license information collecting the assigned license information and its collective content are outputted to a recording medium. The content use control device reproduces a partial content contained in the collective content recorded on the recording medium and controls the use of the reproduced partial content according to its use condition.

When data whose storage period is limited by copy control information is temporarily stored in a removable recording medium, the data are encrypted and decoding information (encryption key) necessary to decrypt the encrypted data is held on the device side. By doing so, the data cannot be used beyond a permitted period of the temporary storage. A storage device has an external input/output I/F for removably connecting a removable recording medium; a reception section for receiving copy control information and data (such as video data), the storage period of which data is limited by the copy control information; an encrypting section for encrypting the received data; and a control section for storing the encrypted data in the removable recording medium and storing decryption information (encryption key), necessary to decrypt the encrypted data, in a place in the storage device, outside the removable recording medium. The data stored in the removable recording medium can be reproduced only by the storage device.

A controller of a recording device issues a secure command to a storage device, and then waits the time estimated necessary for the storage device to execute the secure command before issuing the next secure command. When a controller of the storage device is executing the previous command, it notifies the recording device of being in process. When the previous command has been completed normally, the controller moves to the next process. Information for estimating the execution time of the command is obtained from the storage device in advance.

A technology is provided to improve tamper resistance in encrypting data to be secured and inputting/outputting the data between a recording device and a host device. When the recording device issues an input/output command to a storage device to input/output data to be secured, the recording device attaches an ID to the command to identify to which cryptographic input/output processing the command belongs. Upon reception of a sequence command, the storage device receives the command if its ID has been allocated and the command is verified to have been issued in the correct sequence. The sequence ID is used to identify a process system while appropriately managing the steps of executing commands.

A controller in a hard disk serving as a data storage device stores a license including a content key for decrypting encrypted content data E and others in a secure data storage portion. The license is managed in the secure data storage portion in accordance with a LBA, and the LBA for storing the license, which is being processed for transmission, is stored as a log in a log memory of the secure data storage portion. When a failure occurs during the transmission processing, the license, which was being processed for transmission, is specified based on the LBA stored in the log memory.

A recording area of a hard disk is managed by units. Each unit comprises physically continuous recording regions having predetermined size, and usage status of the unit is stored in an allocation unit (AU) management table. Data requiring a real time processing is stored in each unit. When the usage status of the unit is changed or modified due to the recording or deletion of data, the AU management table is updated and then information indicative of the fact that the AU management table has been updated is recorded. An apparatus where the final change is made is detected at the time the hard disk is inserted or a file system is initialized. And if the apparatus which last made the change adopts the file system which does not use the AU management table, then the table is reconfigured so as to retain the consistency of the AU management table.
