A friction stir joining device includes a tool, a rotary driver, a linear-movement driver, and a control device. The control device is adapted to (A) dispose so that a first member opposes to the tool, and the first member, a second member and a third member are located in this order, (B) control the linear-movement driver and the rotary driver so that a tip-end part of the tool presses a joined part of a to-be-joined object while the tool is rotated, (C) control the linear-movement driver and the rotary driver so that the third member softened extends above an upper surface of the second member, and the tip-end part of the tool reaches a first position, and (D) control the linear-movement driver and the rotary driver so that the tool is drawn out from the joined part while the tool is rotated.

Friction stir joining device, method of operating the same and joint structure

A joined assembly includes: a first member; a second member which has a facing part facing the first member in a thickness direction thereof; and joints lying along the facing part to join the first member and the second member to each other. The joints include: a pair of end joints respectively located at the opposite end portions of the facing part; and an intermediate joint located between the end joints and having a lower joining strength than the end joints. The end joint includes a fastening member mechanically joining the first member and the second member. The intermediate joint includes a friction-stirred part joining the first member and the second member by friction stir.

A friction stir spot welding apparatus according to the present invention includes: a rotary tool; and a perpendicular-to-plane detector, which detects whether or not the rotary tool is positioned to be in a perpendicular-to-plane state relative to a joining target portion of workpieces. The perpendicular-to-plane detector measures distances to at least three measurement positions set around the joining target portion by means of, for example, position sensors. The measurement positions are set to be positioned at the vertices of a polygon on a reference plane to which forward and backward movement directions of the rotary tool are normal. The perpendicular-to-plane detector detects that the rotary tool is positioned to be in the perpendicular-to-plane state relative to the joining target portion of the workpieces if all the distances to the measurement positions are equal to each other.
