A contactless data carrier has a measurement port receiving an external signal to be compared, a threshold generator that generates different threshold values, a comparator that compares the external signal with the threshold values, and a controller that controls the variable threshold generator on command from an interrogator and returns the comparison results to the interrogator. The comparison results returned to the interrogator may be the results of the individual comparisons, or information derived from a threshold value at which the comparison result changes. The contactless data carrier is small, lightweight, and inexpensive, and can be used to perform an essentially unlimited variety of measurements by connecting suitable sensors to the measurement port.

Packets being transmitted through a communication network are recognized as belonging to various individual flows. A property of each individual flow is measured by adding a value, such as a unity value or a packet length value, to a cumulative sum when each packet in the individual flow is recognized, and subtracting a fixed value from the cumulative sum at unit time intervals. The packets are prioritized according to the cumulative sum. This scheme enables network resources to be used preferentially for individual flows that do not cause congestion.

A processing rate monitoring apparatus includes an appearance interval counter for counting a packet interval in a monitored connection at a real number level, and a determining arrangement, operable each time a packet corresponding to a monitored connection is detected, to compare a count value on the appearance interval counter indicating a time elapsed from the previous detection to the detection of the packet with an allowed value for an appearance interval calculated from a transmission rate of the monitored connection to determine the presence or absence of a transmission rate violation in a current monitoring cycle.
