To provide a medical device, whereby the non-specific absorption amount is reduced, its durability is excellent and eluents from the surface layer are reduced. The medical device comprises a device substrate and a surface layer provided on at least part of the surface of the device substrate in contact with water, wherein at least part of the surface of the device substrate is made of an inorganic material, the surface layer is made of a cured product of a compound having a biocompatible group and an alkoxysilyl group, the content of the biocompatible group in the compound is from 25 to 83% by mass, and the content of the alkoxysilyl group is from 2 to 70% by mass.

A compound for inhibiting protein adhesion comprising a fluoropolymer that has units having a biocompatible group, a fluorine atom content of from 5 to 60 mass % and a proportion P represented by the following formula of from 0.1 to 4.5%. (Proportion P)=((proportion (mass %) of units having a biocompatible group to all units of the fluoropolymer))/(fluorine atom content (mass %) of the fluoropolymer))&#xd7;100.

Protein adhesion inhibitor

In a process for producing a liquid crystal element comprising an alignment-treated substrate and a layer of polymer liquid crystal having a pattern, mesogenic groups in cross-linkable polymer liquid crystal are aligned, and the cross-linkable polymer liquid crystal is cross-linked while the mold is pressed against the layer of cross-linkable polymer liquid crystal, at a temperature higher than the glass transition temperature of the cross-linkable polymer liquid crystal and lower than the clearing point temperature of the cross-linkable polymer liquid crystal.
