Two inclined cover units of the housing can be switched between an opened state and a folded state. Two coupling cover units of the housing are deformed with respect to the two inclined cover units when the two inclined cover units are in the folded state, and the angle holding mechanisms hold the two inclined cover units so that ends of the two inclined cover units on the opening side are separated away from each other when the two inclined cover units is in the opened state.

An image reading apparatus comprises a housing to block ambient light and including a rectangular opening on a bottom, an image capturing unit to capture an image of a medium in the opening, and a plurality of light sources disposed in the housing and emitting light to irradiate different areas of the opening. The housing includes four cover portions corresponding to sides of the rectangular opening. The four cover portions include a pair of inclined-cover portions which are switched between an open state and a folded state and a pair of connecting-cover portions which connect the two inclined-cover portions. The two connecting-cover portions are connected to the inclined-cover portions in a transformable manner, and when the two inclined-cover portions are in the folded state, the connecting-cover portions enter gap between the inclined-cover portions by being transformed with respect to the inclined-cover portions.

An image-reading apparatus includes a case constituted to shut off ambient light and including an opening on a bottom surface thereof, an image capturing unit capturing an image of a medium in the case through the opening, a plurality of light sources disposed in the case to emit light to the opening, and an image-processing unit performing image capturing by the image capturing unit, and performing composition process on plural image data captured by the image capturing unit. The light sources emit light in a direction to form shadowed areas outside of different edges of the medium when the medium is smaller than an area of the opening, and the image-processing unit extracts the edges based on the shadowed areas in the image data and crops the medium from the image data based on the extracted edges.
