The light-emission control section causes the plural light-emitting portions to periodically emit light in accordance with image data representing an image that is to be formed on the image-holding member, to form the image on the image-holding member. The light-emission control section varies a light-emission period during formation of the image, so as to correct for periodic fluctuations within the image of at least one of density and magnification ratio in the second direction.

Plural unit heads are disposed in a paper conveyance direction, and recording head units are configured and disposed in a staggered manner. Head recovery devices are disposed as positions avoiding the locus of splattering of ink droplets from the unit heads. The recording head units can record an image across the entire width of a sheet of paper, and it is not necessary to move the recording head units in the paper width direction. Dummy jetting can be conducted at gap regions between two sheets of paper in an image recording section. The plural unit heads are unitized.

A test pattern is formed on a sheet in a full-color image forming apparatus and the test pattern formed on the sheet is read in an image read unit. From the result of reading the test pattern, misregistrations of vertical and horizontal scaling factors, parallelism, squareness, skew, side registration, and lead registration in the test pattern are determined, and mounting positions, drive timings, drive speeds, and the like of constituent members are adjusted.

By detecting the specific pattern images with sensors, misregistration amounts on a transfer belt are calculated by a misregistration correction control section. Averages of the misregistration amounts for respective colors are calculated for each region that corresponds to a single recording medium placed on the transfer belt. The scanning timings of image writing units are controlled by an image signal output control section based on the calculated averages. An image sampling and color shift correction system in a multiple image forming apparatus forms a multiple image by providing a plurality of image output units along a transfer belt. An image control unit applies image data to the image output units. A pattern generator repeatedly generates a register shift measurement pattern in the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction of the respective image output units. The register shift measurement pattern is formed outside of the largest paper area. A sampling unit samples an image formed by the respective image output units at both sides of a paper on the transfer belt in the main scanning direction of the transfer belt. A processing unit takes data sampled by the sampling unit and processes the amount of register shift. A control unit controls the image output and image sampling correction.
