A device for detecting RF power information, for use as a stand alone purpose built device, or connectable to an external computing instrument such as a laptop, PDA, or cell phone, or other similarly capable technology. The device scans two or more bands in the wireless frequency and provides output to the user with wireless information about multiple bands of information.

A system to generate a wakeup signal for a low power device: The system includes a capacitor, the capacitance of which changes when a user touches the device by placing a finger or hand near a certain location on the device. The capacitor is cyclically charged to a pre-established value and then discharged. The time required to charge and discharge the capacitor is a function of the capacitor size and thus, a function of whether or not the operator is touching the device. The number of charge-discharge cycles that occur in a certain period of time is counted. If the number is relatively small, it indicated that a user is touching the device and a wake signal is generated. If the number is relatively large, it means that the user is not touching the device and no wake signal is generated. Thus, in the embodiments shown, a wake signal is generated when the operator touches the device.

When wireless binding or pairing is required, two wireless devices change from a normal broad wireless operating range to a reduced wireless operating range. The wireless devices then conduct binding or pairing operations in the reduced wireless range. This prevents other wireless devices in the same area from detecting the same reduced range binding signaling and inadvertently binding with the wrong devices. After the reduced range binding operations are completed, the wireless devices automatically switch back to the broader normal wireless operating range and use the exchanged binding information for conducting normal wireless communications. The reduced range pairing scheme creates a simple and intuitive technique for pairing wireless devices without requiring the user to press buttons or select devices from a list.

A method and apparatus for creating USB peripheral device report descriptors: A short, compressed, report descriptor is stored in a peripheral device. This short report descriptor is transmitted to a USB wireless bridge and combined with templates stored in the bridge to create a USP report descriptor. Power is saved because less time is required to transmit the short report descriptor than would be required to transmit a full USB report descriptor. Hardware is also saved in the peripheral device since less memory is required to store the short report descriptors as compared to storing a full USB report descriptor.

A wireless device decodes Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) encoded data and identifies data that can not be successfully DSSS decoded (invalid data). A checksum operation uses successfully decoded DSSS data (valid data) to correct the identified invalid corrupted data. The improved error correction leverages the valid and invalid bit information normally provided in DSSS systems to more effectively correct corrupted data bits. The improved error correction increases the processing gain of wireless devices thus increasing the effective wireless range without having to increase transmit power.

A wireless tracking device and method of operation. A processor connected to a positioning system may periodically determine a location of the device. A wireless radio is connected to the processor for transmitting the location of the device across a wireless area network. The processor may be a microcontroller in a vehicle monitoring system, configured to receive vehicle location input from the positioning system as well as sensor input to determine vehicle condition. The wireless transmitter may be configured to transmit vehicle position and vehicle condition data to a remote data network access point.
