An apparatus for supplying clean fluid to a component in a well may include a filter. The filter may include a housing having an outlet, a conical permeable element disposed at least partially inside the housing, and a tapered helical coil disposed at least partially inside the permeable element. A first opening may be formed at a first axial end of the permeable element, and a second opening may be formed at a second axial end of the permeable element. The apparatus may further include first conduit fluidly coupling the outlet and the component, and a second conduit fluidly coupling the second opening and a tubular of the well.

Vortex filtration for debris-sensitive components in a well

A flow control system for use in controlling flow of a fluid composition in a subterranean well is disclosed. The flow control system includes a flow chamber that includes an inlet and an outlet oriented such that the fluid composition flows circuitously through the chamber, forming a vortex at least at the outlet. The flow control system further comprises at least one flow control structure shaped and positioned in the flow chamber such that a velocity of the circuitous flow is reduced and the vortex is eliminated or substantially reduced.

Flow control system for use in a subterranean well

An apparatus to be positioned in a geothermal wellbore formed in a subsurface formation. The apparatus comprises one or more components to inject a supercritical fluid into the subsurface formation. The apparatus comprises a flow control assembly configured to control flow of the supercritical fluid into the geothermal wellbore based on a density of the supercritical fluid in the subsurface formation.

A transition in the fluid composition of a production fluid is detectable downhole based on a rotational response of a rotor through which flow is directed. The transition is detectable, at least in part, based on different rotational speeds of different fluid compositions. The transition may be detected or confirmed by an anomaly in the rotational response (e.g., a temporary dip) due to an emulsion between two or more fluid components. The non-Newtonian behavior of the emulsion makes its presence easily detectable in a rotor chamber. These principles may enable a rotor to act not only as a power source but as a water cut sensor.

Provided is a fluid flow control device, a well system, and method. The fluid flow control device, in one aspect, includes an inlet port, an outlet port, and a fluid chamber positioned between the inlet and outlet ports. The fluid flow control device, in one aspect, may further include a float positioned within the fluid chamber, the float having a net density that is between a first density of a desired fluid and a second density of an undesired fluid, such that the float may control fluid flow through the fluid flow control device when encountering the desired fluid or undesired fluid. The fluid flow control device, in one aspect, may further include a fluid mixer positioned uphole of the fluid chamber, the fluid mixer configured to receive unmixed or partially mixed fluid and turn it to mixed inlet fluid prior to the mixed inlet fluid encountering the fluid chamber.

A magnetic coupling mechanism in a downhole flow control tool comprising a first chamber within a flow path of wellbore fluids with a first component comprising a Halbach array of magnets. A second chamber isolated from the wellbore environment comprises a second component with a Halbach array of magnets. The first chamber and the second chamber are coupled with a nonmagnetic separation. The second component is translated with the first component by a strong magnetic flux produced by the array of magnets.

Method of using a magnetic array to strengthen/direct magnetic flux in a downhole flow control valve coupler and power generator

A fluid flow control device, a well system, and a method are provided. The fluid flow control device, in one aspect, may include an inlet port, allowing a downhole fluid of a borehole to flow into the fluid flow control device, and an outlet port, allowing the downhole fluid to flow out of the fluid flow control device. The fluid flow control device, in accordance with this aspect, may further include a fluid chamber positioned between the inlet port and the outlet port, wherein an electrokinetic film is located within the fluid chamber and is capable of generating a voltage as the downhole fluid flows over the electrokinetic film.

Borehole electrokinetic energy generation and on-line water determination

A system can be used to recover hydrogen from a geological formation. The system can include a first flow control device and a second flow control device. The first flow control device can be positioned in a wellbore, which can be positioned in a geological formation, to control flow of a first material based on one or more first fluid properties of the first material. The second flow control device can be positioned in the wellbore offset from the first flow control device to control flow of a second material based on one or more second fluid properties of the second material. The second material can be different than the first material and can include hydrogen. The flow of the first material and the flow of the second material can be controlled in response to wellbore fluid being injected into the geological formation to enhance a hydrogen-producing reaction.

A spool valve assembly and methods for use downhole to control fluid flow into a borehole from a downhole formation. The assembly includes a valve body having an interior. The assembly also includes a spool moveable within the valve body interior from a first position wherein the spool prevents flow through the valve body, to a second position wherein the spool allows flow through the valve body at a first flow rate, and to a third position wherein the spool allows flow through the valve body at a second flow rate different than the first flow rate. The spool is moveable from the first position to the second position using hydrostatic fluid pressure acting on the spool from outside the valve body. The spool is moveable from the second position to the third position using gas pressure from a chemical reaction producing a force sufficient to overcome the hydrostatic pressure.

An apparatus configured to be positioned on a tubular string in a wellbore formed in a subsurface formation. The apparatus comprises a generator assembly disposed on the tubular string and configured to output power to a downhole tool. The generator assembly includes a first generator configured to output a first power to the downhole tool. The generator includes a second generator configured to function as an exciter for the first generator.

A downhole flow control device is used to control the production of formation fluids while using flow of the formation fluids to drive a turbine. Flow through a turbine chamber is optimized using a chamber insert that cooperatively defines a reduced chamber volume with the turbine chamber. The chamber insert includes an overhead portion defining a ceiling over the turbine and an arcuate portion contiguous with an arcuate portion of the turbine chamber. The baffle is perforated to allow some flow to exit the reduced chamber volume to a bypass port in a cavity radially outwardly thereof. The turbine may be used for any suitable downhole application, such as an inflow control device or to generate electrical power.

The float, in one aspect, includes a ceramic base material having one or more cavities therein, the ceramic base material and the one or more cavities creating a net density for the float that is between a first density of a desired fluid and a second density of an undesired fluid, such that the float may control fluid flow through a flow control device when encountering the desired fluid or the undesired fluid.

The fluid flow control system, in one aspect, includes a fluid nozzle operable to receive production fluid having a pressure (P) and discharge control fluid having a control pressure (P). The fluid flow control system, in accordance with this aspect, further includes an inflow control device having a production fluid inlet operable to receive the production fluid having the pressure (P), a control inlet operable to receive the control fluid having the control pressure (P) from the fluid nozzle, and a production fluid outlet operable to pass the production fluid to the tubing, the inflow control device configured to open or close the production fluid outlet based upon a pressure differential value (P−P). The fluid flow control system, in another aspect, includes a flow regulator coupled to the inflow control device, the flow regulator configured to regulate a pressure drop (P−P) across the production fluid inlet and the production fluid outlet.

An apparatus for activating chambers of downhole hydraulic screens. The apparatus comprises an outer sleeve, an inner sleeve, and a flow path. The outer sleeve is coupled to one hydraulic screen on one end and another hydraulic screen on another end. The inner sleeve couples to base pipe at both ends. The flow path is an annulus defined between the outer diameter of the inner sleeve and the inner diameter of the outer sleeve. Hydraulic seals are formed at the interfaces between the inner sleeve and base pipe and the outer sleeve and hydraulic screens. In practice, the assembled apparatus and hydraulic screens are ran downhole to a production zone using production tubing and a running tool. Fluid from the surface is pumped into the production tubing, diverted therefrom, and into chambers of the hydraulic screens using the flow path to conduct fluid between the hydraulic screens.
