A paving machine can include a frame; a screed coupled to the frame, the screed including one or more screed plates; one or more movable extender mechanisms located at a back end of each screed plate and configured to extend and retract up and down beneath the screed plate; and a controller configured to extend the one or more extender mechanisms a pre-determined distance before the screed begins a paving operation and to retract the one or more extender mechanisms after the screed has begun the paving operation.

A screed assembly for use with a paving machine is disclosed. The screed assembly can optionally comprise: a screed plate; a heating assembly having a heating element positioned on the screed plate; a heating element cover positioned on or adjacent the heating element; a screed frame releasably coupled to the screed plate and having one or more openings therein; and a plurality of compression spring assemblies connected to the screed frame and connected to the heating element cover. Each of the plurality of compression spring assemblies can be are configured to exert a desired force on the heating element cover. The plurality of compression spring assemblies are accessible through the one or more openings of the screed frame and the bolt is moveable relative to the screed frame to adjust a position of the heating element cover relative to the heating element for facilitating removal of the heating element.

The sensed heights are communicated to control circuitry of the paving machine, through signals from the sensing circuitry, and control circuitry controls rate of movement of one or more of the conveyor system and the auger system.

A paving machine including an adjustable screed assembly is provided. Actuators adjust the screed assembly into the plurality of different configurations. Sensors sense a respective configuration parameter indicative of the configuration of the screed assembly. A controller is configured to save a first set of parameters including the configuration parameters and save a second set of parameters including the configuration parameters in response. The controller is configured to recall one of the first set or second set of parameters, and adjust automatically the configuration of the screed assembly to correspond to the configuration parameters included in the recalled first set or second set of parameters.

A machine with a chassis and a push-roller assembly connected to the chassis. The push-roller assembly engages a vehicle, has a support frame with rollers, and support arms with a chassis end connected to the support frame and a linkage end connected to the chassis. The support frame moves relative to the chassis when the support arm pivots with respect to the chassis and the support frame. The machine includes an actuator controller associated with an actuator in the push-roller assembly. The actuator is connected to the support arm, causing the support arm to pivot with respect to the chassis and support frame, displacing the support frame relative to the chassis.

A paving machine for laying a mat of paving material on a paving surface includes a generator, such as a switched reluctance generator, integrally installed with a pump drive and operatively connected to an output shaft of a power source of the paving machine. The generator outputs AC power to a power converter that in turn outputs DC power for a plurality of screed heating elements to produce heat to warm a screed. The paving machine may also include an insulation monitoring system for determining the occurrences of ground faults in the electrical components by comparing current levels in the components to a predetermined maximum current level. A controller of the paving machine may monitor the temperature of the generator and produce the speed of the power source to prevent overheating.

A machine comprising a vibratory compactor assembly having a cylindrical drum connected to the machine with an axle. The assembly has a shaft extending concentrically through the center of the cylindrical drum that has a first end and a second end. The shaft has an electromagnet between its first end and second end. The electromagnet can receive electric current to create a magnetic field that applies an attractive magnetic force between the shaft and the drum that pulls the shaft and at least a portion of the drum toward one another.

A method and various apparatus are provided for assisting braking in a paving machine having hydraulically driven ground engaging elements driven by a hydraulic motor, and one or more screed electrical heating elements powered by a generator. In the event that the application of the machine deceleration system occurs at a machine speed exceeding a predetermined threshold value, the hydraulic motor of the drive train is configured to drive the hydraulic pump of the hydraulic system. The hydraulic pump is linked to the system generator to generate electrical power to drive the one or more screed electrical heating elements at a current greater than the current previously being provided to the one or more screed electrical heating elements.
