An HVAC controller is provided having a plurality of control terminals for connecting to corresponding control terminals on an indoor unit for an HVAC system, at least one controller power terminal for connecting to a power terminal on the indoor unit for the HVAC system, and at least one shutoff terminal for connecting to a power terminal on a thermostat for the HVAC system, and a controllable power relay electrically coupling the shutoff terminal and the controller power terminal. Interrupting power from the power terminal on the thermostat deactivates the thermostat. The controllable power relay is closed during normal HVAC system usage and is opened for a testing process, and the shutoff terminal is the only connection between the HVAC controller and the thermostat that is not electrically coupled with the indoor unit.

HVAC controller and a method for testing HVAC systems

Systems and methods are provided for predicting failure of an air filter within an HVAC installation. Also provided are methods for calibrating the systems described. The system provided typically includes air filters and vents, and a processor at an application server configured to implement methods described. Each vent may include various sensors, such as a temperature sensor or a sensor for evaluating indoor air quality. The method may receive information about a total volume of air pumped by an HVAC system over time, determine the volumetric quantity of air passing through a particular filter, and compare that quantity of air to a threshold amount representing the lifetime, or some percentage of the lifetime of the filter. Where the system includes multiple vents and multiple filters, the system may implement a model for calculating the volumetric quantity of air associated with each individual filter.

Smart air filter and systems and methods for predicting failure of an air filter

Systems and methods are provided for determining a use condition of an appliance, such as a sump pump, and outputting an indication of the current use condition of the appliance. A system implementing the method will first generate an actual first signature of a first characteristic associated with the appliance. The system will then generate an actual second signature of a second characteristic associated with the appliance. Each of the actual first and second signatures are then compared to corresponding expected signatures. The system then selects a current use condition from a plurality of use conditions based on the relationship between the actual signatures and the expected signatures.

The calibration data may include temperature and flow rate data from each of said plurality of smart HVAC vents. The system may generate calibration tables in accordance with the recorded calibration data and transmit instructions to each of the plurality of smart HVAC vents to optimize thermal conditions and energy efficiency of the HVAC system, in accordance with said calibration tables.
