Writing instrument

A writing instrument, which has an inner and outer writing element with separate writing medium reservoirs. The writing elements are coaxially mounted in an outer barrel and axially moveable with respect to one another. A driving mechanism may be actuated to allow a user to selectively extend one writing element. The inner and outer writing elements may have an inner sleeve therebetween to improve, for instance, rigidity of the outer writing element and to prevent contamination of the writing medium reservoirs. An outer sleeve may also be provided over the outer writing element. The outer sleeve can function to hold various components of the outer writing element together, and to allow for clean and easy refill of the outer writing element, especially when the outer writing element is a porous nib with a filler-type writing medium reservoir. The writing instrument is designed so that a user can replace the inner and/or outer writing elements when their respective writing medium have been expended.

Combination writing instrument

An improved clip retention apparatus and to a method for attaching a clip to a writing instrument. The clip retention apparatus may comprise a clip, first and second plug bodies, and a retainer element. A portion of the clip may be disposed between the plug bodies, and the plug bodies may be coupled to the retainer element. The retainer element may be coupled with a writing instrument or formed as part of a writing instrument. The clip, plug bodies, and retainer element may be configured and arranged so that movement of the clip between the plug bodies is at least inhibited.

Clip retention plug

A mechanism for automatically adjusting the chamber length in a writing instrument to accommodate refills of different lengths. The mechanism comprises at least first and second elements operably engaged with each other. When contacted by a refill, the second element automatically moves from a first position associated with a first chamber length to a second position associated with a second chamber length. A biasing member may releasably hold the second element in the first position. In one embodiment third element is fitted within the second element, and is operably and movably engaged with the first and second elements. When contacted by a refill, the third element automatically moves from a first position associated with a first chamber length to a second position associated with a second chamber length. A method of using an automatically-adjusting refill seat mechanism is also disclosed.

The pen ( ) has a body ( ) having distal and proximal ends, a roller ball cartridge ( ) disposed in the body ( ), a cap ( ) removably disposed on the proximal end of the body ( ), a control member ( ) slidingly disposed in the cap ( ), a spring ( ) attached to the distal side of the control member ( ) and abutting the roller ball cartridge ( ), and a drive rod ( ) engaged with the control member ( ). Rotation of the drive rod ( ) moves the control member ( ) distally or proximally, thereby adjusting the bias force applied by the spring ( ) to the roller ball cartridge ( ).

Roller ball pen with adjustable spring tension

A piston converter for a fountain pen that permits a user to selectively engage the drive mechanism to the converter is disclosed. The converter has a hollow body fluidly connected to a nib of the pen at one end and a plunger assembly slidably disposed therein. The plunger assembly is engaged to a hollow drive rod. An engagement rod with a first end and an engagement end extends into the drive rod. The drive rod has an internal cavity configured to engage the engagement end of the engagement rod. The engagement end of the engagement rod can be selectively moved into or out of the engagement cavity, thereby permitting selective engagement of the drive mechanism for the piston converter.

Fountain pen with leak proof piston converter

A roller ball pen that permits a user to adjust the bias force that biases a roller ball cartridge out of the pen to suit the user's particular writing style. The pen has a body having distal and proximal ends, a roller ball cartridge disposed in the body, a cap removably disposed on the proximal end of the body, a nut slidingly disposed in the cap, a spring attached to the distal side of the nut and abutting the roller ball cartridge, and a drive rod engaged with the nut. Rotation of the drive rod moves the nut distally or proximally, thereby adjusting the bias force applied by the spring to the roller ball cartridge.
