A method includes detecting, by a first data storage device, an error when reading data from the first data storage device. The method further includes correcting a portion of the error, by a controller of a host system, using host-level outer codes; and communicating, by the controller, error correction information to the first data storage device in response to correcting the portion of the error using the host-level outer codes.

Initialization stripes of a redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID) may include determining whether the stripes have already been initialized based on redundant correction information. Further, un-initialized stripes may be initialized before intended if write requests are received for such un-initialized stripes. Still further, rebuilt stripes (e.g., portions thereof) may also be checked to determine whether such rebuilt stripes have been initialized based on error detection codes.

Apparatus and method for managing data in a multi-device storage system, such as a RAID (redundant array of independent discs) system. Distributed data sets are stored across a plurality of storage devices. A selected storage device is replaced with a new storage device responsive to an anomalous event. A rebuild operation is performed to reconstruct data from the selected storage device to the new storage device. The rebuild process includes accessing a list of distributed data sets in a local memory. For each distributed data set in the list identified as constituting valid data, read commands are issued to the remaining storage devices and a write command is issued to the new storage device. For each distributed data set in the list identified as constituting unused data, a data clear command is issued to each of the remaining storage devices and to the new storage device.

Systems and methods for storing and retrieving data on a magnetic tape accessed by a tape drive having an associated tape drive processor in communication with a host computer having an associated host processor include writing data to at least one partition within a logical volume having an associated number of sections designated by the host computer from a predetermined number of sections associated with the magnetic tape, wherein each partition extends across one section.

System and method for storing data with host configuration of storage media

A system and method for automatically linking partitions on storage media for use within a storage management system is provided to minimize wasted space on the storage media, the time and expense traditionally spent reclaiming partitions containing invalid data, and the computer processing capability required to write data to and read data from the storage media. The storage management system includes a partitioned storage tape, a host application running on a server, and an archive device. The host application is operative to track location information for each host file or data object written to the storage tape. Using the location information, the host application is able to identify one or more 'free' or writable partitions that are created on the storage tape as host files expire. Moreover, when writing host files to the storage tape, the archive device is operative to automatically link the writable partitions to form logical volumes such that when reading host files from the storage tape, the archive device can automatically navigate through the logical volumes.

A microprocessor of a tape drive may identify a pattern associated with data files previously written to tape, predict information about a next data file to be written to the tape based on the pattern, select a tape rate based on the predicted information, and operate the tape drive at the selected tape rate.

A data writing apparatus includes a tape drive, a buffer and non-volatile memory. When a synchronization request is received from a device sending data to be written to a tape, the apparatus is operable to copy data corresponding to the synchronization request from the buffer to the non-volatile memory. The data may be stored in the non-volatile memory until at least the time when the data which it is a copy of is written to the tape from the buffer.

Systems and methods for managing errors on a magnetic tape having a plurality of partitions accessed by a tape drive having an associated tape drive processor in communication with a host computer having an associated host processor include receiving mapping information from the host computer that designates at least first and second logically adjacent partitions for reading/writing consecutive data, receiving a read/write request to transfer the consecutive data for the first and second partitions, detecting a data error when attempting to read/write the data for the second partition and communicating a corresponding data error message to the host computer, and receiving modified mapping information from the host computer that designates a third partition as logically adjacent to the first partition for reading/writing the consecutive data.

System and method for managing errors on a magnetic tape

In one exemplary embodiment, a noise signal is introduced into a read-back signal when data is written to a removable data storage medium. While writing the data to the removable data storage medium, a portion of the data written to the removable data storage medium is read from the removable data storage medium. An error rate is determined based on the portion of the data read from the removable data storage medium. A read-back signal is generated corresponding to the portion of the data read from the removable data storage medium, which is used to detect if an error occurred in writing the portion of the data to the removable data storage medium. A noise signal is added to the read-back signal. The noise signal is adjusted based on the determined error rate.
