An amplifier circuit includes a input point, an output point, and an amplifying path from the input point to the output point. The amplifying path includes a first switch and an amplifier in series with the first switch. The first switch includes a first transistor having a first gate, a first source, and a first drain, the first gate coupled to a control point. The first source or drain is coupled to the signal input point and the other is coupled to the amplifier. The amplifier includes a second transistor having a second gate, a second source, and a second drain. The second gate is coupled to the second switch in the signal amplifying path. The second source or drain is coupled to the signal output point. A third transistor may be coupled to the signal output point through the second transistor in a cascade amplifying configuration.

Methods for directional coupler termination impedance control are provided. In one embodiment, a method for termination impedance selection of a directional coupler in a power amplifier module is provided. The method includes determining at least one of a power mode or a frequency band of operation of the power amplifier module. The method further includes selecting a termination impedance of the directional coupler based on the determination using at least one switch.

An amplifying circuit for receiving a signal in a wireless network includes an amplifier and two switches. The amplifier includes an isolation switch having a gate connected to a control signal for activating the isolation switch transistor in a bypass mode and a source/drain connected to the input for receiving the signal and the other source/drain connected to the gate of an amplifier transistor. The amplifier also includes a bypass transistor having a gate connected to a control signal for activating the bypass transistor in a bypass mode. The bypass switch is connected in parallel with the series combination of the isolation switch and amplifier between the input and output, enabling the received signal to bypass the amplifier. In the bypass mode, the isolation switch prevents RF energy from voltage modulating the gate of the amplifier transistor gate thus reducing undesirable distortion and harmonics from the amplifier.

Apparatuses and methods for diffusion sensing are disclosed. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a complimentary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) switch and a switch sense block. The switch includes a gate, a drain, a source, and a well. The source and drain are formed in the well. The gate is formed adjacent the well between the source and drain, and the source is configured to receive a bias voltage from a power amplifier. The switch sense block is configured to measure a signal indicative of the voltage of at least one of the source or drain voltage of the switch and to generate an output signal based on the measurement.

Apparatus and method for diffusion sensing

Apparatuses and methods for directional coupling are disclosed. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a directional coupler, a termination impedance, a switch, and a control block. The directional coupler includes a power input terminal, a power output terminal, a couple terminal and a terminate terminal. The power input terminal can receive a radio frequency signal from a power amplifier, and the power output terminal can be electrically connected to a load. The switch has an ON state and an OFF state, and includes an input electrically connected to the terminate terminal and an output electrically connected to the termination impedance. The switch is configured to provide a relatively low impedance path between the input and the output when in the ON state and to provide a relatively high impedance path between the input and the output when in the OFF state. The control block can set the state of the switch.

Apparatus and method for directional coupling

Disclosed are high linearity CMOS-based devices capable of passing large signal and quiescent power amplifier current for switching radio frequency (RF) signals, and methods for biasing such devices. In certain RF devices such as mobile phones, providing different amplification modes can yield performance advantages. For example, a capability to transmit at low and high power modes typically results in an extended battery life, since the high power mode can be activated only when needed. Switching between such amplification modes can be facilitated by one or more switches formed in an integrated circuit and configured to route RF signal to different amplification paths. In certain embodiments, such RF switches can be formed as CMOS devices, and can be based on triple-well structures. In certain embodiments, a bias voltage applied to an isolated well of such a triple-well structure can be substantially tied to a source voltage coupled to source and drain, so as to yield desired performance features such as high amplification linearity even when the source voltage changes.

Disclosed are voltage distribution device and method for controlling CMOS-based devices for switching radio frequency (RF) signals. A RF switch may be used as a power splitter in order to allow WLAN and Bluetooth (BT) coexistence. Multiple branches of the RF switch are enabled concurrently, which allows WLAN and BT signals to be received simultaneously. The RF switch functions as a power splitter to split signals received from an antenna to both a WLAN receiver and a BT receiver. In one embodiment, a second switch may be placed on an output of a low noise amplifier (LNA). This configuration will operate as a power splitter between WLAN receiver port and a BT port, and maximize the receiver sensitivity by amplifying both the WLAN and BT signals. One or both of the two switches may also function to bypass the LNA when the LNA is not needed to provide a low loss RF path, which serves to broaden the dynamic range of the device and avoid signal distortion during periods of increased signal power.

Apparatuses and methods for enabled switch detection are disclosed. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a complimentary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) switch having a gate, a drain, a source, and a well. The source and drain are formed in the well, and the gate is formed adjacent the well between the source and drain. The source is configured to receive a radio frequency signal from a first power amplifier. The apparatus further includes a switch enable detect block configured to compare a signal indicative of the gate voltage of the first switch to a first reference signal and to generate an output comparison signal based at least partly on the comparison. The apparatus further includes a power amplifier bias control block configured to enable the first power amplifier based at least partly on the output comparison signal from the switch sense block.
