A method and apparatus for processing workpieces to form parts. Tools associated with a multi-spindle machine may be positioned with respect to a plurality of workpieces on a fixture comprising a plurality of platforms and an adjustment system. Each platform may be individually moveable with respect to others in the plurality of platforms about a number of axes. The plurality of platforms may be configured to hold the plurality of workpieces in which each platform may be configured to hold a workpiece in the plurality of workpieces during operations performed by the multi-spindle machine. The adjustment system may be configured to move each of the plurality of platforms about the number of axes independently from the others in the plurality of platforms. The operations may be performed on the plurality of workpieces using the multi-spindle machine and the fixture to form a plurality of parts.

A method and apparatus for operating an aircraft. The aircraft is flown. A skin panel is held on a support structure. The support structure has flanges on a number of edges of the support structure, the flanges being substantially orthogonal to the edges. The support structure also has openings into the support structure substantially orthogonal to the flanges. First connecting structures on clips are connected to the flanges and positioned such that an opening in each clip is aligned with one of the openings in the support structure. The skin panel is positioned such that the clips are received in holes in the skin panel. Fasteners are attached to the second connecting structures such that the support structure holds the skin panel.

One aspect of the disclosure relates to a die comprising a primary plate and secondary plates. The secondary plates comprise through weld holes formed along a direction. The through weld holes of adjacent secondary plates do not overlap when viewed in the direction along which the though weld holes are formed. The primary plate is coupled to at least one secondary plate abutting the primary plate by first welds located in the through weld holes. The secondary plates abutting each other are coupled by second welds located in the through weld holes.

A method and apparatus may be provided for performing an operation on a workpiece. A tool holder with a tool and the workpiece may be positioned relative to each other. The tool holder may be attached to a machine. The tool may have a sleeve and a number of cutting features. The sleeve may have a first end, a second end, a surface, and a channel with an opening at the first end of the sleeve and an opening at the second end of the sleeve. The sleeve may receive at least a portion of a rod for the tool holder in the channel. A stiffness of the sleeve may be greater than a stiffness of the tool holder. The number of cutting features may be associated with the surface of the sleeve. The operation may be performed using the tool holder with the tool on the workpiece.

An apparatus and method for removing weld flash from a structural assembly are provided. The apparatus generally includes a tool with a head that defines an edge and first and second opposite surfaces disposed at an angle converging toward the edge. A shaft, which extends from the first surface of the head, is configured to be engaged to a shaft holder of an actuation device so that the head extends from the actuation device and is configured to lift the flash from a surface of the assembly as the tool is moved in a path along a surface of the assembly with the edge contacting the flash.

A method and apparatus may be present for performing an operation on a workpiece. A tool holder with a sleeve and workpiece may be positioned relative to each other. The rod tool holder may be attached to a machine and may have a first stiffness. The sleeve may have a channel and a second stiffness. The channel may be configured to receive at least a portion of the rod. The operation may be performed using the rod with the tool on the workpiece.

A method and apparatus for managing machining. A desired level of engagement of a tool may be identified with a workpiece. A tool path for the tool may be generated relative to the workpiece. The tool path may have a number of levels of engagement of the tool with the workpiece along the tool path. The number of levels of engagement of the tool with the workpiece along the tool path may be based on the desired level of engagement.

Tool path generation for machining operations

Techniques and apparatuses to provide vibration reduction of a workpiece when performing machining operations are disclosed. In various embodiments, a machine tool includes a shank having at least one end configured for engagement with a machine operable to rotate the shank. A cutting portion has a diameter defined by features used to remove material from a workpiece. The cutting portion is coupled to the shank. A vibration reduction dampener may be located between the shank and the workpiece.

A cutting tool includes a tool body having proximal and distal ends and defining a central axis. The tool body includes a shank portion and a fluted portion. The shank portion may be configured to be rotatably engageable to a milling machine. The fluted portion may include a plurality of teeth disposed about a circumference thereof and being formed at a radius relative to the central axis. In one embodiment, the teeth may be divided into first and second tooth sections with the teeth in the second tooth section being formed at a reduced radius relative to the teeth in the first tooth section.

Variable diameter cutting tool

Machined structural members and methods for forming the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, a structural member includes a web portion that extends in a first direction that includes a non-planar portion, and a first flange portion coupled to the web portion that extends in the first direction. A second flange portion is coupled to the web portion that also extends in the first direction. The first flange portion and the second flange portion are spaced apart in a second direction that is approximately perpendicular to the first direction. The web portion and the first and second flange portions are integrally formed as a unitary, monoblock component.

The present invention comprises methods of machining a workpiece. In one embodiment, a method includes positioning a workpiece in a first position in a process station of a machine system, and forming at least one check feature on the workpiece. A position of the check feature is then sensed while the workpiece is positioned in the first position, and one or more machined features are formed on the workpiece relative to the check feature while the workpiece is positioned in the first position. The workpiece is then moved from the first position to a second position within the process station, and a position of the check feature is again sensed while the workpiece is positioned in the second position. One or more machined features are then formed on the workpiece relative to the check feature while the workpiece is positioned in the second position.
