A composite that includes an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane having a porous microstructure. The porous microstructure of the ePTFE membrane is impregnated with a stiffening polymer. An acoustic device assembly that includes the composite and an acoustic device is also described. The composite and the acoustic device assembly can exhibit an insertion loss of less than 7 dB at 1 kHz when measured by the Acoustic Response Measurement ('ARM') Test.

A protective cover assembly is disclosed that comprises a porous expanded membrane having a plurality of pores, a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The porous expanded membrane comprises an active area and a bonded area. The bonded area comprises an adhesive material that forms a bridge extending through the plurality of pores in the bonded area from the first surface to the second surface. The adhesive material in the bonded area improves the Z-strength and allows the porous expended membrane to be a lightweight material having a mass/area ratio of less than or equal to 3 g/m.

A pressure equalizing assembly with a nonporous membrane traversing across an acoustic pathway defined by an opening in a housing. A breathable layer connected to the nonporous membrane may be laterally arranged to the acoustic pathway. An acoustic cavity is defined by the breathable layer and nonporous membrane. The nonporous membrane has a side facing the opening in the housing to prevent fluid or moisture from penetrating into the acoustic cavity. The breathable layer further equalizes pressure in the acoustic cavity by providing a venting layer.

The waterproof sound-transmissive cover is characterized by providing a frequency response curve with a difference between a maximum sound pressure level and a minimum sound pressure level of 13.0 dB or less in the range of frequencies from 3 kHz to 8 kHz, and an insertion loss at 1 kHz of less than 14.0 dB, and said cover comprising: a porous film having (1) a water pressure resistance measured according to JIS L1092 water penetration test method B (high pressure method) of 20 kPa or more, and air permeability measured according to JIS L1096 method A (Frazier type method) of 3.0 cc/cm&#xb7;sec or more, and (2) a tensile strength measured according to ASTM standards D412 of 5.5N or more.

An acoustically reactive composite can include an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane formed of a highly fibrillated ePTFE microstructure with an elastomer fully impregnated within the ePTFE membrane. The composite can have an acoustic loss of less than 7 dB at 1 kHz and a water entry pressure (WEP) of at least 20 PSI. A layered assembly for protecting an acoustic device can include an acoustically reactive composite as described above and an adhesive layer arranged to define an acoustic cavity. An acoustic device can incorporate an acoustically reactive composite or layered assembly as described above, with the acoustically reactive composite or layered assembly arranged to span an acoustic cavity proximate to a transducer of the acoustic device.

A pneumatic projectile launcher with improved valve opening and closing characteristics includes a trigger mechanism in communication with a valve assembly, preferably through pneumatic or mechanical means. This valve assembly consists of at least two members; the first is used to seal a single projectile in a barrel tube so as to accelerate the projectile with a gas pulse ('bolt'). The second member of the assembly is a valve member which controls the release of said gas pulse. The aforementioned pulse that propels the projectile out of the barrel ('forward') also acts on a face of the valve member opposite the projectile, translating the valve member rearward to the original, closed position.
