A composite heat spreader includes a first flexible graphite layer, a second flexible graphite layer, and a gas evolving layer positioned between the first flexible graphite layer and the second flexible graphite layer. The gas evolving layer is temperature sensitive and when a threshold temperature is reached, the thermal conductivity of the gas evolving layer is reduced by at least factor of five.

Composite heat spreader and battery module incorporating the same

Cookware and other heating articles are included herein. The article may have a substrate forming a bottom surface of the cookware. The article may also have a graphite intermediate layer and cooking/heating surface disposed above the intermediate layers. The graphite layer may have one or more of the following properties: (1) a density of at least 0.64 g/cm; (2) a water pick-up of a less than 30% by weight after a 2.5 hour soak in water at ambient conditions; (3) a Taber stiffness in the machine direction at least 25% higher than in the transverse direction; and (4) a sulfur content of less than 350 ppm and any combination thereof.

Graphite containing article

A lithium ion battery pack includes a plurality of prismatic lithium polymer cells and one or more graphite heat spreaders. Each spreader has at least two major surfaces and is made of one of a sheet of a compressed mass of exfoliated graphite particles, a graphitized polyimide sheet, or combinations thereof.

Thermal solution for prismatic lithium ion battery pack

A battery pack includes a plurality of cell assemblies each of which include one or more prismatic batteries. A frame has legs sized and configured to be positioned around the prismatic batteries. At least one leg includes a rear face, curved outer edge and a side face. A thermal transfer sheet is made from a sheet of a compressed mass of exfoliated graphite particles. Each thermal transfer sheet is positioned to contact the major surface of the at least one prismatic battery and is bent over the curved outer edge. At least a portion of each thermal transfer sheet is secured between a heat sink and the side face.

Battery pack assembly having thermal transfer sheets

A heat exchanger assembly includes a fluid transfer layer and a first external layer. The fluid transfer layer is made from an elastomeric material and the first external layer includes flexible graphite. The fluid transfer layer includes at least one channel and is configured to form a passage for receiving a thermal transfer fluid between the channel and a portion of the first external layer.

A battery pack includes a plurality of prismatic format batteries in a stacked configuration. Flexible graphite sheet heat spreaders are interposed between adjacent prismatic batteries in the stack. A heat sink extends the length of the stack of prismatic format batteries. Both heat spreader major surfaces contact the heat sink at contact areas and thereby extend into the heat sink by at least 30 percent of the thru-thickness of the heat sink.

A battery pack includes a plurality of prismatic format batteries in a stacked configuration. Flexible graphite sheet heat spreaders are interposed between adjacent prismatic batteries in the stack. A heat sink extends the length of the stack of prismatic format batteries. But heat spreader major surfaces contact the heat sink and extend into the heat sink by at least 30 percent of the thru-thickness of the heat sink.

A battery pack thermal management assembly draws heat from prismatic batteries having opposed major surfaces and arranged in a stacked configuration inside a housing. The thermal management assembly includes a plurality of thermal transfer sheets made from sheets of a compressed mass of exfoliated graphite particles. Each thermal transfer sheet is positioned to contact the major surface of at least one of the prismatic batteries. A cover plate has a top face and a bottom face and includes a plurality of apertures through which the plurality of thermal transfer sheets extend. The apertures include at least one curved sidewall and the thermal transfer sheets are bent over the curved sidewall. At least a portion of each of the thermal transfer sheets is secured between a heat sink and the top face.
