A mortar ammunition round which contains at least three fragment producing regions covered by a threadably removable aluminum cowling. Detachment of the cowling provides access to several of the fragment producing regions which are located on a removable cup device. A different cup device may then be selectively inserted and the cowling replaced, forming a new mortar round of different select performance capabilities.

81mm increased lethality projectile

An explosive warhead includes shear liners to enhance rupturing of the warhead's housing following an initiation of a detonation charge in the warhead. The shear liners are positioned directly upon the warhead housing's inside surface. The shear liners are applied as metallic powder granules embedded in structural patterns, and applied in a liquid form which is allowed to cure before the charge is installed in to the warhead. Rupture patterns of the warhead housing upon detonation, approximately mimic the structural patterns on the said shear liners.

A high pressure obturator for a breech loaded, tube-launched projectile includes a generally annular ring having a central longitudinal axis and a radially inward portion. A flange portion is disposed radially outward of and partially contiguous with the radially inward portion. The flange portion extends axially forward and aft beyond the radially inward portion. The outer diameter of the flange portion decreases linearly from an aft most outer diameter to a forward most outer diameter. The obturator may be formed of a plastic material and include circumferential wraps of a high-strength fiber completely embedded in grooves in the obturator.

High pressure obturators and method of making

A high efficiency, blow-by reducing obturator for a 105 mm tube-launched projectile is a generally annular ring having a central longitudinal axis and an outer circumferential surface. The outer surface has a first portion parallel to the central longitudinal axis and a second portion adjacent to the first portion. The second portion extends forward and radially inward at an angle of about six degrees with the central longitudinal axis. In some embodiments, one or more grooves are formed in the inner circumferential surface of the ring.

Obturator for 105MM projectile

A muzzle-loaded, fin-stabilized mortar round includes a projectile with a discarding sabot mounted thereon. The sabot includes one or more discrete sections that are circumferentially divided into a plurality of discrete sabot increments. In the case of more than one discrete section, the plurality of discrete sections are arranged longitudinally one after another in abutting relationship. Each sabot increment includes a base portion mechanically connected to the projectile and two opposing side portions mechanically connected to circumferentially adjacent sabot increments.

A method of determining fluid pressure on a gun-launched projectile relies on deformation of a thin layer of a metallic material that comprises the outer layer of a segment of the projectile body. The axial segment of the projectile body that is selected for pressure measurement is altered or replaced with another axial segment. The altered segment has a thin-walled, structural, metallic sleeve that is concentric with an underlying hollow, metallic cylindrical body. The radially outermost surface of the body underlying the sleeve has a plurality of indentations formed thereon. Measurements of the deformations of the thin-walled sleeve into the indentations in the underlying body are correlated with known deformation and pressure data to determine pressure that was applied to the projectile during its ballistic cycle.

Pressure sensing method and apparatus for gun-launched projectile

A mortar mount adapter is configured to fit in a towing hitch system mounted on a land vehicle. The towing hitch system absorbs and disperses recoil force from the mortar. The adapter is disposed in one of a trailer hitch receiver, a gooseneck hitch socket, and a fifth wheel hitch. The adapter includes a socket for the ball of a mortar tube and a shank extending from the socket wherein the socket and the shank are symmetrical about the central longitudinal axis of the adapter.

Hitch-mounted mortar munition system

A non-lethal, hand or rifle fired grenade which widely disperses non-lethal pellets&#x2014;using a flexible multipocket bladder type device which is mounted on a rigid internal frame. The grenade provides a wide distribution arc of rotation for the pellets, as the pellets are located in pockets about the bladder, which is blown outward to expel the pellets. Further, as the propellant is located within the flexible multipocket bladder, the hot gases and embers cannot escape&#x2014;thereby helping to protect the target individuals from exposure to such potentially hazardous materials.

Expanding non-lethal munition

A pre-deformed obturator for a projectile launched from a rifled tube includes an annular ring with a forward planar surface normal to the central longitudinal axis of the obturator. A top cylindrical surface extends aft from the forward planar surface and normal to the forward planar surface. A plurality of projections are formed on the top cylindrical surface and are configured to engage the rifling of the tube. An opening is formed in an aft end of each of the plurality of projections for receiving propellant gas. The opening may also be contiguously formed in the aft surface of the obturator radially inward of each projection. Propellant gas enters the openings in the aft of the obturator and expands the obturator to provide an efficient gas seal.

Pre-deformed obturator for tube-launched projectile

A round for simulating an 155 mm Excalibur ammunition for testing purposes. The round can effectively simulate the flight patterns of a real Excalibur round for testing purposes though made of far less expensive reusable parts. The round is generally fired into a water trough in a long soft catch recovery device so the tested round can later be studied, or generally fired ballistically, to test obturator devices.

A reusable test projectile may be used for spinning and non-spinning shots in a soft catch system. The projectile may include a body having an integrally formed base and a removable nose. The body may define a generally cylindrical open area between the nose and the base. A generally circular cargo retaining ring may be disposed in the open area, normal to a longitudinal axis of the projectile. A cargo area is defined between the cargo retaining ring and the base. The solid bulkhead includes a front surface that forms a rear end of the cargo area and a rear concave surface. A driving band seat can be added on the exterior surface of the body at the bulkhead, for each repeated launch of the projectile, as may be desired. A slipped obturator seat may be formed on the exterior surface of the base rearward of the driving band seat, as desired.

Reusable test projectile

A method of making a liner for a shaped charge or an explosively formed projectile may include making a liner substrate using a 3D additive manufacturing process. At least a portion of the surface of the liner substrate may be surface finished. The surface finished portion may be electroplated with a metal to form a multi-layer liner.

The assemblies can be snapped together to make different geometeric shapes or lines as may be desired, for demolition objectives.

A protective shield apparatus for a light armor vehicle having a turret includes a generally flat base plate mounted to the turret; an armor plate fixed to the base plate and including a front panel, a first side panel, a second side panel and a rear panel, the armor plate being canted vertically outward from the base plate; each of the first side panel, second side panel and rear panel including a ballistic glass window; a rear bracket connected at one end to a rear of the base plate and at another end to the turret; and a z-bracket connected at one end to the rear of the base plate and at another end the z-bracket bears against the turret.
