The present disclosure is directed to a network processor for processing high volumes of traffic provided by todays access networks at (or near) wireline speeds. The network process can be implemented within a residential gateway to perform, among other functions, routing to deliver high speed data services (e.g., data services with rates up to 10 Gbit/s) from a wide area network (WAN) to end user devices in a local area network (LAN).

Network processors

An IDLE insertion technique maps MPCP time onto an EPoC PHY. The techniques address the variability of bandwidth due to bit loading over time. The techniques allow MPCP time to follow wall time at the MAC layer while tracking bytes at the PMD layer. The techniques also facilitate use of the EPON MAC with few changes in an EPoC environment. The bandwidth allocation messages may follow the same format as in EPON, and the techniques may implement IDLE insertion that accounts for EPoC PHY FEC overhead and datarate differences compared to the MAC.

Mapping control protocol time onto a physical layer

In some aspects, the disclosure is directed to methods and systems for controlling periodic jitter arising from a phase interpolator (PI). A receiver can receive incoming data. A fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) can receive a reference clock. Measurement circuitry can measure a parts per million (PPM) offset between the incoming data and the reference clock, of a PI. The fractional-N PLL can restrict jitter arising from the PI, to frequencies within a predefined bandwidth, by tuning a center frequency of the fractional-N PLL to reduce the PPM offset of the PI.

System and method for controlling the impact of periodic jitter caused by non-ideal phase interpolators

A method and system for generating upstream frames in an Ethernet Passive Optical Network protocol over Coax (EPoC) network is provided. Upstream frame configuration parameters are received by a CNU from a CLT in a link info broadcast a message. The CNU can recover the upstream frame configuration parameters from the link info broadcast message and generate at least in part upstream frame.

A medium-to-medium adaptor can be provided in an adaptor node that can interface with an upstream optical line terminal in a PON domain and a downstream device in a non-PON wireless domain. The medium-to-medium adaptor enables an implementation of end-to-end services across multiple quality of service (QoS) domains by passing all traffic with controlled delay and without contention.

System and method for applying an extended multipoint protocol to wireless access systems

Embodiments of the present invention provide a system that identifies an even delimiter in a forward error correction (FEC)-coded Ethernet frame. The system receives an FEC-coded Ethernet frame that includes the even delimiter, which is a predetermined sequence that separates a conventional Ethernet frame and FEC parity bits in the FEC-coded Ethernet frame. Next, the system scans a bit stream of the FEC-coded Ethernet frame. Then, the system determines a first Hamming distance between a first consecutive set of frame bits in the bit stream and the even delimiter. The system also determines a second Hamming distance between a second consecutive set of frame bits in the bit stream and the even delimiter. Both the first and second Hamming distances are shorter than a predefined value. The system subsequently selects one of the first and second sets of frame bits having the shorter Hamming distance as the even delimiter.

Method and apparatus for detecting frame delimiters in Ethernet passive optical networks with forward error correction

One embodiment of the present invention provides an optical line terminal (OLT) in an Ethernet passive optical network (EPON). The OLT includes a number of bi-directional optical transceivers. At least one bi-directional optical transceiver is coupled to an optical network unit (ONU) group that includes a number of ONUs. The OLT further includes a first downstream media access control (MAC) interface configured to provide a first downstream control signal and a splitter configured to split the first downstream control signal to a number of sub-signals. At least one sub-signal is configured to control downstream transmission of a corresponding bi-directional optical transceiver to a corresponding ONU-group.

Method and apparatus for link sharing among multiple EPONs

A system, method and apparatus for power saving using burst-mode transmission over point-to-point physical connections. In one embodiment, a physical layer device (PHY) is provided that includes a data detector that is configured to generate a first control signal upon receipt of a non-idle code group over an interface between the PHY and a media access control (MAC) device and to generate a second control signal when all data received from the MAC device has been transmitted by the physical layer device. The PHY also includes a laser for transmission of data over an optical network cable, the laser being configured to perform a first transition from an off state to an on state based on the first control signal, and to perform a second transition from the on state back to the off state based on the second control signal.

A dynamic readjustment of an energy efficient network control policy parameters in an optical network unit based on a Service Interoperability in Ethernet Passive Optical Network (SIEPON) protocol. The access link between the OLT and ONU has distinct properties that can be used to enhance the energy efficiency control policy on the network facing side of the ONU. In one embodiment, an adjustment mechanism can be based on the receipt, by an optical interface in an ONU, of a control command from an upstream OLT, wherein the control command is configured to provide a limitation on an available time period during which the ONU can communicate with the OLT over an optical fiber cable.

An optical line terminal (OLT) system for a passive optical network (PON) may include a processor, an OLT Medium Access Control (MAC) device communicatively coupled to PON ports, and a switch device communicatively coupled to the OLT MAC device via an Ethernet interface. The processor may map logical identifiers of each PON port to tunnel identifiers, where each tunnel identifier is indicative of a logical identifier and its corresponding PON port. The OLT MAC device may receive upstream data items that include logical identifiers over the PON ports. The OLT MAC device may replace the logical identifier of each upstream data item with the tunnel identifier that is mapped to the logical identifier and the PON port over which the upstream data item was received. The OLT MAC device may transmit, over the Ethernet interface to the switch device, the upstream data items including the tunnel identifiers.

Embodiments reduce overhead in Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) networks by reducing the amount of switching among Optical Network Units (ONUs) done by the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). In one embodiment, Logical Link Identifiers (LLIDs) hosted by the same ONU are linked at the OLT such that the OLT grants same ONU LLIDs consecutively when appropriate. This reduces the optics related delay associated with switching among ONUS. At the same time, the linking of LLIDs hosted by the same ONU allows for data from multiple LLIDs to be grouped together within a single Forward Error Correction (FEC) block at the ONU, when appropriate, reducing FEC overhead.

A data rate control system for an optical line terminal (OLT) may include a processor, an OLT Medium Access Control (MAC) device that includes passive optical network (PON) ports that are mapped to identifiers, and a switch device coupled to the OLT MAC device. The OLT MAC device may determine that a PON port is congested, and may transmit a message to the switch device indicates the congestion at the PON port based on the mapped identifier. The switch device may transmit data items to the OLT MAC device for transmission over the PON ports at data rates respective to the PON ports, may receive the message, and may reduce the rate at which the data items are being transmitted to the OLT MAC device for transmission over the congested PON port without changing the rates at which other data items are being transmitted to the OLT MAC device.

In general, the 1G-EPON standard specifies its upstream waveband broadly to allow for low cost lasers to be used to transmit upstream. Often, however, the lasers actually used by many 1G-ONUs to transmit upstream only occupy a narrow waveband that does not overlap with the upstream waveband specified by the 10G-EPON standard. The present disclosure is directed to systems and methods that exploit this fact to efficiently provide for the coexistence of 10G-EPON and 1G-EPON over the same set of optical fibers in the upstream direction.
