A CSSX (Extended Cascading Style Sheets) file including non-CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) extensions is used to define and reference variables and inheritance sets. A CSSX file compiler determines a value of the defined variable, modifies the CSSX file by replacing all references to the defined variable with the value, and generates the CSS file from the modified CSSX file. The inheritance set is defined in the CSSX file and includes a reference to a previously defined CSS rule set. The CSSX file compiler defines a new CSS rule set as a function of the determined attributes included in the previously defined CSS rule set of the defined inheritance set and generates the CSS file including the newly defined CSS rule set.

Extended cascading style sheets

Various embodiments enable navigation flows that occur within a single tab to be tracked through the use of identifiers that are created and passed between client-side and server-side software. The client-side and server-side software work in concert to utilize these identifiers to track navigation within a particular tab. In at least some embodiments, a client can request a web page from within a tab and, responsive to that request, a server can create an identifier and associate the identifier with the web page. The web page and identifier can then be returned to the client. Subsequent web page requests from within the tab include the identifier so that the server knows that the request came from the same tab.

Markup language stylizations that may be applied to a source document are defined in overlay documents such that no special tags or markers are required in the source document to enable stylization via the overlay document. A manifest document defines an association between a source document and one or more overlay documents.

Techniques for capability and behavior signatures are described. In one or more embodiments, various data describing the capabilities and behaviors of a client is collected. The collected data is analyzed to generate a signature that is indicative of whether the client is operated by a human or a non-human. Selective access to resources is provided to the client based at least in part on the signature that is generated.

A product server downloads distributed application component from a resource server and updates an application at a predetermined synchronization time. Other aspects include associating a distributed application component and a local application component with a virtual path. If a product server is unable to access the local application component with a virtual path, the distributed application component is downloaded from a resource server.

Runtime versioning and distribution of dynamic web-elements

A multi-format centralized framework for the distribution of resources. The framework allows product teams to update resources independent of a product build process and, to store and distribute the resources from a central repository (a shared resource server system) in multiple formats. The central repository includes a storage structure that can support all markets and all products. Resources can now be updated on the product frontend or delivered directly to the client when requested. Team resources can be stored in a single file format (e.g., RESX) and distributed in multiple formats (e.g., XML, RESX, JS, etc.). Both server-side and client-side rendering are supported. In further support of the deployment of updated localized strings without requiring a build, the architecture supports the sub-versioning of strings. In support of scalability, different levels of caching of the strings through edge cache and custom designed cache mechanism are provided.
